In our continuous effort to educate and inform about gaming, Dane from Art in Gaming is here to fill you in on all the details of one of man's most important assets- fire. Watch it, listen to it, take it to heart. You KNOW every game back in the day had a "fire level".
first
in my opinion colored fire kinda messes up the atmosphere and as i wright this i wonder if any one really appreciates the mood fire sets in a lot games.

Awesome
I had almost forgotten about "the art in gaming" parts of screwattack. It has been a long time since the last one. This was a good view of fire in gaming with lots of games depicting it. Only scene I was surprised to not see was the FF7 Sephiroth scene.
Have to agree....
Great topic, but I'll have to admit I was highly disappointed when I didn't see the Sephiroth scene. I may be a little biased being an RPGer but I feel that that scene really exemplified how fire can be used to show strong character development. First, it showed how truly powerful he had become, walking through a wall of flames with no fear or injury, and second it showed how twisted he had become. I mean he walked through fire like it was nothing, with a grin on his face I might add.

agreed
That IS the pinnacle of all dark evil fire in video games. It is also one of THE most famous CG scenes to date. Thanks for mentioning that so I didn't have to.

i love fire in games
i speaks to our instincts.. even very young gamers know that fire almost always takes your life away in a game..
as a weapon or worst enemy
in the new Alone in the Dark video game
Fire is your best weapon and it also can be your worst enemy
Missed potential
This seemed like such a good idea with no real in-depth analysis. It felt like an essay that didn't have any body, just an introduction and a conclusion. The last part with the different examples was the best and most interesting, otherwise this could have been done a lot faster with the description: "Images of fire in games". I would have liked to see some game-specific examples and comparisons, showing the progression literally in say all the Zelda games. Also TERRIBLE choice of music, JEEZ. If you picked a Hendrix song why was it "Purple Haze" and not the obvious choice of "Fire"? And what a terrible slow minor key orchestration of it on top of that! It would have been cute to play a LITTLE bit of "Fire" at the beginning but pick something that suits the mood of the story you're trying to tell, the music did not suit this video at all. If I'm coming off too harsh, this just rubbed me the wrong way the entire time. Easy answers and missed potential.
Agreed
Can't argue with you there lad but then the Art in Gaming has always came off sounding like an essay, hence why I usually don't watch them.
Thats sucked
Honestly this felt it was made quick and without care.
Boring voice longs silence and loads of ugly fire movies.
Next time try to take a game with class, Shenmue now there is loads of art there.
Nice Art in Gaming, only one scene missing
I liked this art in gaming a lot. The last lines especially were really well written and time nicely with the video. I just have to agree with a previous poster there was one key scene missing. Sephiroth emerging from the flames. I'm not an ff7 fanboy, but I have to admit that scene was epic and one of my favorite video game uses of fire.
Art in Gaming
Makes me feel all FIRED up!
It's really a BURNING sensation.
I must say this video is pretty HOT.
Your puns are
Your puns are terrible.
...You're fired. Damn it, I couldn't help it.
You sure answered in the
You sure answered in the HEAT of the action.
Hendrix
Were those some Jimmi Hendrix tune i sensed in there, sounded like All Along The Watchtower and Purple Haze just done with a horn section.
yeah
it was some strange cover of purple haze... but i can't understand why he didn't use jimi's song Fire, would have fit with the vid much better...
also, i don't rly get the purpose with this vid and i ended up not listening to the one speaking at all, just watching those aaawesome fires-----
Pretty good, but it's almost
Pretty good, but it's almost criminal that he forgot about what is probably the game with the best representation of fire seen to date, Battlefield: Modern Combat for the 360. I swear, the first time I saw something on fire I literally stood there, just watching, while getting pwned.
i saw this a week ago :D
i saw this a week ago :D
Fire next gen
I'm suprised he didnt talk about "next gen" fire like in Far Cry 2 were is spreads and creates forest fires in real time.
I Hear Purple Haze!
That is a rather interesting version of Purple Haze, where can I get that version?
Can't please everyone
I think this show is awesome.
Some, however, will only like it if the show is renamed to, "The Angry Fucking Art of Gaming Nerd"
What Game?
What game is being displayed at 1:10? I remember playing that awhile back. Its the one with the guy with blond hair wsith the sword and the big monster in the Back.
Love the Jimi Hendrix in the
Love the Jimi Hendrix in the background! Keep 'em coming.
Very informative and
Very informative and edumacational. I know feel 17 times more intelligent than I did five minutes ago.
Jimmy
Purple Haze made classical and symphonic? Win.
Music
I really dug the orchestrated version of Purple Haze in the background!
Wow...
Never though about fire in gaming THAT much, but it all makes sense now.....
---Bow down to me, for I am your god---
Purple Haze!
All in my brain, Lately things they don't seem the same. I've got money, but I don't know why... Scuse' me while I kiss the sky!
Freakin' loved the music as you may or may not have deduced. Where can I get that?
Quite a good episode, I
Quite a good episode, I thought you could of talked about which games incorperated fire well or differently.
Rather than repeat the feelings that fire can give us.
Also everytime I see GTA anywhere I want to play it.
Worst fire obstacle?
I think the worst fire obstacle is the Tomb Raider series. If Lara touches fire, you'll burn and die.
Hate it.
great show, but...
It didn't seem to focus much on the "gaming". I felt likle he was describing what fire can do in real life.

Fire!!
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time had one of the greatest fire level(s) ever...
awesome video...
This is a great series
Glad to see that this is back, it's always good to see video games in a different light.
fire in game is...
... AWSOME!
I love the art of gaming.
I love the art of gaming.
Nice to be done but a little boring
As my Title says, this Art of gaming hasn't been the best I've seen...
It was Kinda slow, with a doubtful choice for the musics. No explanation about symbolism, except at the end (wich was Good by the way) no real comparison on each generation/consles/franchises, no must-be-seen fires.
It could have been a lot better, or at least a lot shorter.
I vote two Screwies for this one...
Four words
Alone in the dark.
That game is built around fire, every trailer has fire in it.
What's the game
at 1:09? Looks cool.
c:
I was starting to wonder whether or not you guys were going to continue doing this. Love the art in gaming. Keep it up!
Interperate?
Definitely a new take on the word. Interpret works too!
Loose Audio
I've always thought that the mixing of the audio for The Art in Gaming was a bit a loose, and this one really was. I'm just too nit picky, but a bit of hard limiting couldn't hurt and perhaps some vocal compressing and mixing with the music, but hey good video even so.
no vocals
Well I think that they don't wanna put any vocals in there because it might distract from the video. They put a string version of purple haze in this one.

BURN! BURN! BURN TO THE GROUND!
Almost every Mega Man game has a fire level.
Fire Man
Heat Man
Flame Man
Burner Man
Flame Mammoth
Flame Stag
Magma Dragoon
Burn Dinorex
Blaze Heatnix
Flame Hyenard
Burn Rooster
Not bad
It was okay, although I kinda expected more detail on the graphical side of things. Why does the fire in Bioshock look so much better than the fire in... ugh.. I dunno. Insert game with not very good fire. You get what I mean.
But hey if you were going for a more "how it sets the theme" then that's fine as well. How games are designed rather than how they work. In fact, that's probably what I should expect from this show, it is called the Art of Gaming after all.
TMNT 2 the arcade for nes and...arcade
I think that was the first game I saw fire in a game. The first level of TMNT 2 the one that was in the arcades and for NES...and now live arcade :P classic game :D
Bioshock
Can't believe they didn't show a clip of the fire plasmid in bioshock, they should have showed the little animation when you first get it.
Warning fire spreads.
Fire is way important
My first time watching The Art of Gaming and it was more than what i expected. man fire has come a long way and for me the best looking fire is in GTA 4. Love the show and can't wait for the next video.
Nice
indeed fire is a great representation of many things and graphics from games have made it life like now. You should do water for the next show, the reflections and waves even to ripples are indeed impressive as fire
ICE PLZ
yeah fire is cool
but what about ice?
Honestly, I was expecting something more...
Such as a detailed look at the evolution of fire from 3 framed animation to full-on particle effects...
....highlighting particular innovators and stuff like that....
Very Well Done
Its always nice to see the art in gaming come on the scene and Give us a little reminder of the Inherant expression in video Games.
Snooze Fest
Wow, that insight was very interesting... Not
Flames of War
That was a pretty cool video. love the flames of war pics.
Hot stuff comin' through!....
Nice job dude, these art in gaming things are pretty interesting and its funny to see how much the element of fire has come from early spirtes and 2 tone colours....
Though when talking about fire i'm suprised that Bioshock want mentioned, the fire at the beignning of the game is awesome, even if the game is shit.....
To be honest, I really felt
To be honest, I really felt like he was saying the same thing over and over again. It just kind of seemed like he told us that fire is good and this is why, fire is bad and this is why, but he didn't go any further than that. I mean he could have told us about lighting and he really could have told us more about the advancements of fire through the ages.
Plus, why Purple Haze? That just seems so random.
I also would have liked to see some scenes from F.E.A.R., that game uses fire so well as an instrument of horror.
Da show
As many of you pointed out the tune is Purple Haze performed by a specific orchestra that has lent their talents to the gaming realm before (this episode marked the anniversary of the Art In Gaming. If you check out the first one you might figure it out). You can also get the tune from the official site, but you will have to do some homework if you want it.
Yes, there are lots of games with fire. I see that some of you mentioned not seeing some memorable scenes, but damn..there are just too many! I must say thought that I'm not shooting for imagery of specific popularity, just examples.
I saw a couple mentions towards there not being side by side comparisons or an evolutionary look at fire. As I mentioned in the preview a while back the focus was on HOW fire is used in video games. Even so, there still is a nod of comparison along with a dash of evolution in there.;)
Voxels and Polygons are planned for the future, but an episode of Master Koga may appear in before then.
That was boring
and pointless. I mean, who cares that fire brings various moods.
COD 4 Fire
The fire in Call of Duty 4 doesn't burn. So you can actually use it to hide in. Guess they missed that kind of detail, or they just didn't care.
Purple Haze
Did anyone besides me catch some of Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze in there? right around 1:00? anyone?
When you assume, you make an ASS out of U and ME.
