When i was a kid i thought that was how you spelled Dick so after sonic or mario in the morning i used to giggle and think something bad was on TV. . .
The name comes from the fact that sets used in plays & traditionally shot sitcoms (Like Friends, for example) only have 3 walls, and the edge of the stage/the screen is located where the fourth wall would be.
Breaking the fourth wall is when a character talks directly to the audience, breaking all logic as they shouldn't know the audience is there; making a joke that refers to the actor portraying a character's real life events & relationships but using in reference to the character being portrayed; or after explaining a plot hole, having a character say something like "Otherwise, that'd just be really stupid" in reference to fan complaints about the error.

My favorite example of breaking the 4th wall is in Space Balls during the "Schwartz" fight between LoneStar and Dark Helmet. They accidentally kill one of the crew filming the movie, Dark Helmet blames Lonstar, and they keep fighting like normal. Classic stuff.
Also in Space Balls; Mel Brooks character Yogurt sells merchandise for the film and the bad guys fast forward a tape of the movie to see what happens next. Oh and than there's the part when the bad guys capture the good guys stunt doubles while the real actors get away. lol that was a good one.
Mel Brooks is the best at breaking the 4th wall, imo.

The 4th Wall is the invisible wall between the viewer and the movie. If a character on-screen suddenly addresses the audience, that's breaking the fourth wall.
To break the 4th wall chars. have to make it apparent that their aware of the audience. like in any kid show when they tell them to clap their hands or some thing...

I've never heard breaking the fourth wall having such a literal meaning, I know that's where it came from, but I don't think they have to directly address the audience to break the fourth wall.
I don't know for sure though, This is just what I think.

2. Lou Albano gets a bit plastered before hopping in front of the camera, either because that's the only way he'll get in front of the camera at all or that's the only way he'll dance in front of the camera. Hilarity ensues.
3. A combination of the two, and the Captain doesn't have to have tied one on prior. Just said "one take, you sadistic motherfuckers. Then you give me my check and I'm out this piece." And then drank.
I'm sorry, but to have been wrapped up in the videogame business, that close to the horrid crash of the late '70s, and NOT be making games HAD to have been at least slightly embarrassing.
Now it's something we can all look back at and laugh, telling ourselves that we've outgrown the gimmicky and thinly-veiled attempts to resuscitate the industry. But ask any starving actor out there and they'll tell you that you may have to start somewhere, but it's never fun.
