In this Weeks Retro Corner, Guru Larry takes a look at a game that some consider the grand pappy of beat 'em ups- Renegade. Want an interesting back story to a series? Here it is.
Guru Larry's Retro Corner is a fantastic show. I also recommend to all the g1s his new 10-15 minute review show, Reviewmageddon. That show's gonna develop into something amazing.

I actually played Renegade and loved it, but I can't believe Double Dragon was an unoffical sequel! I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about gaming history, especially with little known facts, but I always learns something new everytime I watch the GLRC. Cool stuff!

If you play the NES version of Renegade, Double Dragon, and River City Ransom, there is a part in each game that uses the same music (the Double Dragon title screen music)!

Aside from the "Chase HQ" Retro Corner, this is most likely the only game that I can ever remember actually playing. However, I'm not sure if I really cared for it or not.

I would never have known that was where Double Dragon came from! That's a lot of games spawned from just one game, which I have played before in this arcade that used to import games... but it's gone now.

Wow, he really is a guru. His past videos were alright, and informative, but I thought I knew a lot about side scrolling beat 'em ups already--was a fan of them growing up. This is really interesting, though!

Can't say much that hasn't already been said but it is nice to know about the grandaddy of sidescrolling beatem' ups and the games it spawned because of it.

I've always liked Guru Larry's stuff and this is no exception. Another great opportunity for me to learn some new stuff and be entertained by it to. You make me want to be European!
This was great to see how the Sidescrolling series Double Dragon came to be. I never got to play this game but now after seeing it, I have to play it. The spin off games are great, my personal fav is River City Ransom on the NES and now finally it got a VC release with is great. Overall Guru Larry keep these classics alive with your reviews. Thanks

Great review, I've never known that double dragon actually came frome renegade. It's like HANDSOME TOMs USELESSSSSSSSSSSS KNOOOOOOOOOWLEDGE was still alive.
WOW I am impressed I had no idea that renegae was the parent of double dragon, that is a friggin sweet deal. its nice to learn something new especially about videogames.
I never knew Renegade had such an impact on the world of Beat Em Ups... I only played the NES version and it was TERRIBLE
I also never noticed all the homages to The Warriors in the game...
Heck, the level with the all female enemies could be considered a tribute to the Lizzies...
I highly recommend everyone to try out the Warriors game...
As far as movie games and 3D beat em ups go, it's one of the best...

Great video and very informative, but for the world's franchises ie. super dodgeball etc. I was wondering if you kept some out of the list? I think Techno's Samurai and Techno's Ice Hockey is in it as well.

Wasn't their another game like this with the main character called Kunio Kun? The story was similiar, trying to find the toughest high school student in all Japan? It was a very awesome blend of River City Ransom and Street Fighter. My favorite part of the game was the enviroments. Spikes and electricity were all over the place.

Goes to show that there's always gonna be someone who knows more about games than you. I never even heard of Renegade before, much less knew that it spawned awesomeness like Double Dragon and River City Ransom.
Submitted by chrischaos on Fri, 05/02/2008 - 12:14pm.
I somehow expected River City Ransom, since it kinda looks like it, but Double Dragon? Very cool. I remember this Super Nintendo Japanese game that was similar where you bust out of jail and fight criminals a la River City Ransom and all the side scrolling beat-em-up games mentioned, but I didn't know what was really going on since it was in Japanese, so...
Great review, Larry. I always mark out for a ScrewAttack Europe video.
It sucked. It was just so bad. The game was just as hard as Double Dragon III on the NES. Ok, maybe not AS bad (I could get to level 3 or so) but man... it sure felt like it. Would of loved to played the arcade version though. Wow.
While Guru Larry's Retro Corners are not always my favorite, he does things a little bit differently than most of the other videos here at ScrewAttack.com. Guru Larry doesn't just rant about a video game for several minutes, but tells you why he's ranting about it. He delves much more into the history and lore of the video games and doesn't just blather on about nothing. I'd imagine that, if there was a video game trivia game show, Guru Larry would win every time.

I must admit, I did enter a video game trivia show that was on TV in the UK a few years ago (The Gamers Republic) but lost.
Ironically because they got the questions wrong, not me.
Stuff like true or false, the Dreamcast comes with a 56k modem, I said false as the UK one comes with a 33.3k one, but they said I was wrong.
Sidescrolling fighters? Hell yes!

It's a pretty unknown secret and even I didn't know myself until I did a bit of research into it.
But I always do loads of research on these retro corners, get them factually watertight as possible.
