The Scoop! Mario Kart Wii

This time around HighSchool Ben takes a look at the most popular game on the Wii right now. Sure you've heard the reviews and been told that the wheel sucks but do you have Tte REAL Scoop on whether or not you should pick it up?

Awesome

Another awesome scoop. Plus, first comment!!!

Dammit! I was so close! This

Dammit! I was so close! This is by far my favorite Wii game...that's right, I went there.

Gotta love The Scoop.

I also agree that the wheel is awesome.

I was very shocked as to how well it kicked ass.

Great review too!

I actually agree with this.

I actually agree with this. I got the game today, and man that AI is brutal as all hell. I often get blue shelled, and right after I get red shelled.

I'm going to go out and buy

I'm going to go out and buy this game now :)

HighSchool Ben has more integrity than most paid reviewers.

Hey Ben,

Thanks for noting glaring negatives about hyped games! Many sites are way too afraid to mention issues like the cheapness of the AI and the horrible walls. When these sites omit important information like this, they don't tell the whole side of the story to the people that don't own the game yet, and instead just cater to those that already do own it. That's some fucked up priorities.

Gamespot and IGN threw softballs at this game, and Gametrailers just whined about how a party game was being too much of a party game, only pandering their review toward the 'hardcore veteran' Mario Kart player while telling all other regular gamers to die in a fire and figure the shit out ourselves. I like GT, but damn their review was entirely useless.

They don't want to deal with the fanboy backlash, I guess. You already know this, as you caught a lot of bullshit from 'fans' for your Smash Brawl review. You're the biggest fan of Brawl, and it still wasn't enough for some fanboys because you dared to point out obvious flaws.

The Scoop!, making Gamespot and IGN look like sissy bitches since 2008.

No Wild Wing?

Lol, I completed pretty much the whole game with that kart :P

Edit: Whoops, shouldn't be a reply to Lee's

I love the Wild Wing

I second with Pasukaru, I always use the Wild Wing for my kart of choice. I don't know what you're talking about Ben.

Though I will agree that the CPU is an ASS sometimes. I can be in first place for the first two laps and then just as I'm about to finish the last lap, I'll get all these hits and attacks and come in at like 8th place.

But I love the game it's so addicting. My only real complaint are the credits. Why can't you just press the A button and be done with the credits!? I don't care about the production team I want to get back to the game!

I agree for the most part...

While Ben's probably way more impartial than most review cites, I think IGN mentioned the annoying AI. And yeah GT's review seemed to bash it the whole time, but then stil gave it a pretty good score.

But yeah, your right that most reviewers are more concerned with catering to the fans than the undecided (just look at the GTA4 scores...)

Good stuff

Good stuff. People have bitched about the online but i have had no problem so far so i agree with Ben, Nintendo pulled it off!

The wheel didnt feel as natural to me because it hangs in the air instead of being landed in somthing concrete, so i pull it to strange angles when i turn and i dont get the right drift angle, but to each's own.

I want a Wii so BAD!

by the time I game a wii and this game no one will be online.

Changing controllers...

One thing that I really HATE about this game is that you can't change you controller, that should be standard to all games.
I prefer playing with the GC controller and was pissed to see that you can't use items with Y anymore, but with L. Y isn't even working for anything in the game, that's some bullshit.

Blue Shells

Im suprised that Ben didnt mention the Blue Shells

BLUE SHELLS SHOULD BE BANNED!!!

He did Mention them

Very briefly he showed that footage of him getting blue shelled and then slammed into 7th.

Mario Kart Wii rocks!;)

Mario Kart Wii rocks!;)

Ready...Set

Ready..set go, it about time i bought a wii game that actually has almost no lg and as gor the ai damn i still wish the rubberband effect could be fixed but that in almost all racing games

More CONS / Controller

Nice one Ben! +1

If I may add another couple of cons...

- The Ink. Brought back from the DS version of Kart, you can ink your ememies screen disrupting their view for a bit... The problem? It happeneds WAY too often!

- The Rain Cloud. Not all items are good anymore. Get a Rain Cloud and you have about 10 seconds to tag someone else or you will be zapped with lightning. The problem? Sometimes you will pick these up a be too far away from another player that you will never be able to tag them intime.

I started out with the Cube controller, it was ok, but I was so used to the Double Dash controlls. Then I tried the wheel, which is pretty cool, but I find the controls to be a bit laggy. Also my other "friends" would hit my hands causing me to turn my Wii wheel and putting me into a wall.
I actually found the best combo is the Remote and Nunchuk. Check it out!

Great scoop, I share your

Great scoop, I share your view on this game.

The release date for this game came on such a short notice, I didn't have time to build up any hype for it. Besides, I knew I was going to get it no matter what since I've always had fun with the other Mario Kart games. Man, somewhere I forgot how great Mario Kart can be. I can't recall having this much fun during the early hours of a game. It pretty much feels like the best Mario Kart to date.

I have nothing against the Wheel, it feels great to drift with it and, well, it kind of forces me to really get into the game when I'm playing, which is a good thing. The Mote and nunchuk combination gives slightly more precise controls (and wheeling/tricks are easier), but I prefer the Wheel.

And yes, driving into a wall or going offroad slows you down too fucking much.

True dat

Yeah sure everything he says is true, but you get bored of this shit so fast.

I live in sweden so I had it a long time and I got bored like the first week. Mario kart need more stages dammit.

are You kidding me Ben?

the wild wing kicks ass, for people whom are good the game *coughs*

well....

might as well play a heavy kart... and actually have some speed mixed in with the downed handling ;)

I was pretty disappointed

I was pretty disappointed with this game, but I guess I was expecting a little too much out of a wii game..

This was great, just a typo

This was great, just a typo on the front page, "sucks but do you have Tte REAL Scoop"

A good scoop this week. I

A good scoop this week.
I agree almost on every point with you Ben.
Although I can only play with the Wii Wheel on 50cc without losing, but maybe that´s just me sucking, so well I use the GC-Controller.
That´s also because of the broken AI, I think.
But well I didn´t regret, that I bought this game, because it´s awesome.

Not a good scoop this time

Not a good scoop this time around. Way to positive even in the negative points. In my opinion this mario kart sucks ass, and the biggest issues werent shown correctly.

First: Item Rubberband
If you are in first place, you only get bananas and green shells. The other places get ridiculous amounts of lightnings, blue shells and pow-blocks. If you win or loose is total luck, because you get hit by a blue-shell, two red shells and lightning without the chance to do anything in between. I get hit by three blue shells per race ALL TIME. No Skill, just luck = broken game.

Second: Local Multiplayer
Another thing that really pisses me off. All the cool local multiplayermodes are gone, or crippled. 10 Kart Battle Arena with balloons that dont mean anything? WTF, that was my favourite mode, now it sucks ass.

I was positevly surprised by the wiiwheel though. I dont prefer it over the GC-Controller, but it works pretty well. Way better than in every other sideways-wiimote racing game. Take that Nitro Bike ! ;)

Good Scoop

The A.I. is rage-inducingly unfair... I've come very near to throwing my controller at the wall on several occassions with how many times I've been rubber banded.

Also, the WiiWheel is incredible! I vastly prefer it above a controller any day of the week. It's intuitive, smooth, responsive and immersive. Everything I had hoped it would be and Nintendo managed to meet and exceed my expectations.

Also, thank you Nintendo for actually nailing the online play this time around! Keep it up!

Great!

Another great Scoop! I want to play some Mario Cart right now so you did your work Ben!

Scooped!

Another engaging edition of The Scoop!, Ben! It's important, in this age of bias and subjectivity, to provide a balanced view - especially as far as video games are concerned.

Thanks again for this! Fantastic work!!!

Nice.

Awesome Scoop.
But I didn't like the wheel. Guess I'm a old school player so I like the Gamecube controller better.
And I like the karts and I can easily beat anyone with a bike. So Bike doesn't always mean win even if it have the boost thing.

nice one

this was a great episode of the scoop! Although it seemed that you were just nick picking at the end, you did great HighSchoolBen.

But

Is it worth buying a Wii for (along with Brawl and Galaxy)?

It could but

I don't have a Wii... i can't say -_-

Nope

As for Mario Kart alone, definetly not. I didnt play brawl, but Galaxy is awesome. The best mario since Mario 64. There are some other cool games I enjoyed. Warioware is a blast, Red steel and Dragon Quest Swords are decent, Twilight Princess is a higlight of course, and resident evil 4 is even better on the wii.

But it really depends on what you own, and how much money you have laying around. If you dont have a xbox 360 or ps3 buy one first. If you have one, but you only have barely enough money to buy one or two games a month, dont buy a wii. If you have it, go for it.

As with all Scoops, when

As with all Scoops, when it's all said and done, that's for you to decide.

Actually, I think it's

Actually, I think it's easier to control the carts - with the Wii Wheel i mean.

Online rocks! :P

Promise!

I promise I won't use the Wild Wing!

That's what we like !!

Serious reviews with plus and minus are great when brought to us by Hs BEN.

I'm saying serious cause there is no balls injuries!

Awesome as last time!

Awesome as last time!

Freakin High shool

Great scoop Ben. I just wanna buy a wii and play mario kart.... That sounds like an utopia. Well cheers Ben and for the record, nervous nick is going down.... No pun intended.

jejeje
^^Where did the Ozzy cookies go?^_^

Yet again, a brilliant accomplishment

Congratulations for another great review, can't wait for the next one.

NICE WORK B3N!

good scoop
im suprised you like he wii wheel
ive heard that the turning response lags from a friend of mine,
but Ive heard good from most people , reviews on the wheel

oh yeah you for got the GOD AWFUL the battle mode is....
teamed and timed ...PLAIN RETARDED!

i love this game!

im so gald this game will be at the iron man! now back to noobing pwns online in the meantime lol

Good job ben this scoop was

Good job ben this scoop was awesome. I'm really amazed the online worked well for the Mario Kart. I wish they could've done that with ssbb but...oh well. thats the past.

-8-bit since '86

Maybe they'll fix online in

Maybe they'll fix online in the next SSB.

Great Scoop

You got all the points right! But im dissapointed that the bikes are so mutch better than the carts... I mean ITS MARIO CART not bike :( And you wont find any carts in the worldwide top 10 on time trail..

Great scoop, Ben. One of the

Great scoop, Ben. One of the greatest Wii games as well. Add me: 4124 5087 4095

Great Review

I gotta agree with Ben. This game really did rock and the problems that everyone has compiled now I think are really the only problems. Especially the Balloon Battle, I mean, I know its not called Mario Battle but because its been in every Mario Kart game, I think a lot of us got a little sad :(. As for the wheel, its a preference thing. It works and it works well but damn I'm lazy and don't want to hold it up. Wiimote and nunchuck FTW. Second, I don't know about everyone but I welcome the difficulty, I jumped right into 150 cc and was very pleased by the fact that I wasn't lapping everyone. In fact, if you play 50cc, you will be lapping people lol. The item issue isn't that bad either, (I mean getting banana's and such when in first and getting nothing but stars and such in last.) If you're good, it won't matter. My bro gets hit with like 3 blue shells and still takes the lead. I get like 3 stars and a gold mushroom and only get to 9th. Oh and my lil bro seems to always get giant mushrooms and stars when in 3rd WTF??

Anyway, as many are saying, bottom line is the game rocks overall. The difficulty, the broken battle mode, and the ridiculus walls and offroad slowdowns are awful but it reminds us to stay on the road. Its a must for every gamer who has the wii.

(Oh and funny/nice story, when my mom saw my bros, my sis and I playing it she started crying because she said it was just like when we were little kids all playing the SNES version together. Heartwamring :))

If you compare the wall

If you compare the wall problem in Mario Kart Wii to the wall/corner problem in Burnout Paradise (if just the edge of the front of your car makes contact with the wall, you're wrecked), Mario Kart's not that bad.

Good stuf....

as usual.
nice job Ben, short to the point. I like this show.

Nice Review!

That was a good review, Ben! I loved it. To everyone, I would say that if you have a Wii, you need this game. It's just a whole lot of fun. The Wii Wheel is really nice and the tracks are fun. I also like the music (very Mario Kart like). The AI's an asshole, but like most have said, it's almost nice to have a challenge.

Ben, man!

This is why your're my favorite ScrewAttack personality! A lot of people disgard the Wheel after a few minutes because they don't give a try *Cough*Corey*cough*.

The stages ARE awesome, but I agree that, YES... The walls are annoying and Bikes are better than Karts.
-The Jerk.

nice

the scoop is great! nice work, Ben!

:(

I always play as the kart you said sucks, and with Luigi also. :(

Keep this up, I wanna see more "Scoops"!

High School Ben speaks the

High School Ben speaks the truth. But I'm surprised he didn't gripe about the items, since that seems to be the number one complaint.

Magnifico

Great stuff. A Scoop of Scoop makes my day!

Grrrr...

Damn it. Just another reason that I hate not having the Wii.

wild wing.....

that car realy does suck the first time playing I thought ;wow what an awesome cart!! and I selected it
but then came the grandprix and I lost

Ben is alive!

Ah so Ben is still alive after Jose crushed him.

Anyway yeah Ben got everything covered. What IGN takes forever to say in their (ugh) written reviews Ben says in 2 minutes. The wheel is awesome.

deals

it was kinda short and i wish the multi player options were spoke of more as oposed to online play. But it was still awsome

I was wrong

At first I thought MKWii was just another Mario kart, but it seems I was wrong.
Besides. It requires more skill than everyone rants that it doesn't.

I wish I didn't recently buy Metroid Prime 3 :(
Now to wait another long time just to buy this game...

MP3 is better.

MP3 is better.

Thanks Ben

Thanks for the review and the tips. I never really liked Mario kart for gamecube simply because the drifting was awkward, i preferred the Crash team racing drift it was easy and you could do it all over Sewer Speedway. But this new Wii one looks pretty legit so I'll take a loot into buying it.

Havent had a chance to play

Havent had a chance to play it but thank you ben for the heads up with the AI

About The Wii Wheel

I was curious about the Wii Wheel controller, because I thought it would be one of those gimmicky accessories that wouldn't work. I'm glad this review answered my questions about it! This looks like a great title and it really makes me want to get a Wii... if I ever find one.

Oh, it's still a gimmick.

But it's a gimmick that's finally worth its salt... and works. Works remarkably well, at that. Nintendo has certainly come a long way from the jackassery of the Power Glove, U-Force and Virtual Boy.

Thank God.

Jackassery... lol

Jackassery... lol

Good game with problems

While High School Ben's review of this game was awesome, there are some things he missed. Battle mode only in teams? Also, if you are an expert at mario kart, this game couldn't be more terrible. Of course, you can still ave fun with this game no problem, but I choose never to use the wheel and resort to using the controller. I win that way ^_^ Also, the item frequency is way off. You are pummeled by items non-stop in first place, and with 12 players... damn, it's hard as hell.

I don't like it, but I can see why others would. I still find it fun to play, to an extent

Snake... you know who that is?

Actually, when I was listing

Actually, when I was listing out my topics, the new battle mode was on the thumbs down list. However, I took that off when I was racing grandprix on Rainbow Road on 100cc and I kept sliding against the walls... costing me the entire cup. I was pissed.... REALLY pissed... so I put that there instead.

The new battle mode is just different. It's still pretty fun, even though the balloons are now pointless bubbles of air floating around.

Great scoop again

Really nothing else to say Ben always seems to come through with the Scoop.
Is he making a dig at foot long praising the wiieel...or however the fuck you would really spell that...anyways don't want to start nothing just saying.
Sidescrollers + Cory = Wheel Bad
Scoop + Ben = Wheel Good

good work

i think i will still buy this game but at least i will always play as the bike now and avoid the flying car thing. lol
