I think that the numbering only accounts for 2D Mario sidescrollers. 5 would be Mario Land. 6 would be Mario Land 2 and 7 would be New Super Mario Bros. I think.

True, I believe that an early SNES ad showed footage where the title screen had "Super Mario Bros. 4" written in red text above the Super Mario World logo. I could be wrong about the "4" part though.

Super Mario World was released in Japan as Super Mario Bros. 4. It just got a name change everyhwere else. Yoshi's Island was given the title Super Mario World 2 everywhere outside of Japan. But it doesn't count as Super mario Bros. 5 cause its a differant game but with some similarities obviously.
The real Super Mario Bros. 5 was released on the DS as New Super Mario Bros. I'm not sure if that is official or not but I have no problems calling it SMB5 myself :D

New SMB was good but it wasn't as epic as SMB 3. I think the reason was that it lacked cool power ups and the ambidexterity of enemies. But then again it was supposed to be like a "new version" of the first SMB, which I think is why it lacked the awesomeness of SMB 3.

Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels was included in the SNES release of the trilogy. However in Japan, the Lost Levels is ACTUALLY Super Mario Bros. 2.
OUR Super Mario Bros. 2 was released in Japan as a game called Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. Yeah, pretty much the same game with no Mario. So Japan had Super Mario 1,2, and 3 but then ALSO got OUR SMB2, but it was called Super Mario USA.
