I want to run down the street, hefting a minigun, and keep shooting til the army gets called in (and not have any innocent people hurt, or actually go to jail). I want to jump on a powerline, and just start pumping lightning at people as I zoom past them, ending with a magnificent swandive to an explosion. I want to shove my rifle in the enemies face and watch his neck jerk backwards, that subtle ballet de mortis. Well, thats a FINE definition of what realism should be about in games but unfortunately its not like that with game developers. Realism for them means what it sounds like, Real like graphics and that is for everything the game is composed of (people, characters, places, etc). What i really dont understand is why is everybody going for that, when we all know that when games start looking exactly like the real world, we (EVERYBODY or at least I) wont like it, and u dont have to go that far back/forward to see that that is gonna be the case... When i played the first Resident Evil for the PS, and the intro started playing i thought it was ridiculous stupid cuz they actually used real actors for The Intro and Ending, and i know u might be thinking well thats not the same cuz that was REAL people, but if THEY keep going in the same direction they are going, someday it will get to a point where u cannot tell the difference between REAL, CG or In-Game Graphics, and when that happens IT WILL SUCK and whats even worse is that with realism not only the graphics change but so do the physics, and seriously who wants that!? lol...

You don't have anything to complain about. You think it doesn't take other people years of striving effort to get over social awkwardness? Just because you've ensconced yourself in bullshit and convinced yourself that you are somehow naturally disadvantaged does not make it the reality of the situation. The reality is that you engage in nebbish fantasies about pointless misanthropy as a means of catharsis for all of this built up faux-angst regarding "humanity".
Just being real with you man, because I have done similar things, to an extent I am embarrassed to even admit. The thought that being a hopeless nerd is somehow a genetic disorder is most definitely comforting and excuses you from having to really be introspective and honest. But it's not true. Some game developers focus a bit much on the graphics at the loss of soul and personality but it's not like there aren't games that both look great and are well done otherwise.

It is true that games sometimes puts you in an awkward position, where you feel you should be able to tackle an obstacle through other means than the game forces you to, but these are in no way redundant in the overall experience. If you pay attention, most games teaches you the fundamentals of how the game should be approached. It's usually easy to pick up and straight forward, allowing you to easily figure out where to go and what to do next. Why would you need more? The game's a crafted piece of art that guides you through a linear, or sometimes a deceptively flexible progression. What is this uncanny valley? It looks more like reality than previously, therefore it must behave like reality? Would you lose your mind if it doesn't? It's like you're watching a movie or just a painting on the wall and wanting real bad to take a swim in that lake, but the interaction options just aren't there. Or getting a penalty card for picking up the ball with your hands in soccer. I know it's not the same thing, but it's just as absurd. The point of the game is to go along for the ride with the preset rules. It's the same fundamental idea that all games were built on, and if it's too big a leap of imagination, then just stick to the games where you can tell that your environment is not some perfect real-life detailed simulation--until you pick up the controller and try to reach out for that hard to climb cliff. Oh, and for the record, you don't really seem bad at what you do, everything is well presented and you do have a shred of truth in your words. I just think this just sounds like bad philosophy, sparked by your dislike of modern day gaming conventions. I'm not a big fan of rants, and I definitely don't come to ScrewAttack for a daily dose of pointless rant. If you must rant about something, rant about something relevant, something that is an actual issue.
/End rant ^_^
Oh, and I'm aware that the name of the show is the Game "OverThinker", but if your exaggerations without punchlines are supposed to be funny, I must've missed the point. :O PC gamer. Consoles are orrright!
Sorry, but I found this to be way too long and not very interesting. But, killaboy's was way too short so... I guess this will get my vote, although I pray it doesn't win in the end.

If anybody is wondering why to bother with Advanced Console Hardware for high end graphics if we aren't aiming for realism.... please consider Team Fortress 2.
The decision to go with a caricature cast, with almost cartoon like characteristics combined with what I can only describe as slapstick gore has been a master stroke in game design. I mean multiplayer missions like capture the flag completely clashed with any serious military theme. It was more like an episode of Road Runner.
Then these cartoon-like team members are able to bring such character and story to a purely multiplayer game (to spite having no exposition or plot) that they are instantly likeable and relate-able. Impossible to achieve by going realistic.
Yet to achieve this artistic aesthetic, it took a lot of processing power. This simply could simply not be achieved on the Wii. And it is quite clear that even more powerful technology could make for much more interesting character design that is not necessarily moving in the direction of realism.
This non-realistic direction is enhanced all the more by HD resolution, Anti-aliasing, dynamic lighting, etc, all the things we'd expect to be most useful for appreciating a more realistic game. Think about it, Pixar's films aren't realistic but DAMN they look good!
More and more developers are avoiding the leap across the uncanny valley with cell-shading and other stylised graphics. Even if they can get it looking real, they may be forced to confront the unrealistic gameplay design that made their games fun to play in the first place.
That is not to say "realism is dead". I just predict there will be a schism in gaming between the hyper-real games that are enthralling, challenging and even traumatising and the "pixar gmaes". Those may even be technically more gory/violent than their Ultra-real counterpart but it is not traumatising, it is the epitome of FUN as all the characters are not seen as human (at most cartoon caricatures) it is FUN to blow them into a mess of giblets as you can't for a second think that it's real.

Deep Rising
Awesome movie? Ha! That movie is awful.
Hmm...

PC gamer. Consoles are orrright!
Too long and boring
Sorry, but I found this to be way too long and not very interesting. But, killaboy's was way too short so... I guess this will get my vote, although I pray it doesn't win in the end.
Moviebob keeps kicking ass.

Team Fortress 2 says hi
Those may even be technically more gory/violent than their Ultra-real counterpart but it is not traumatising, it is the epitome of FUN as all the characters are not seen as human (at most cartoon caricatures) it is FUN to blow them into a mess of giblets as you can't for a second think that it's real.
yup
TF2 is by far my favourite game of this generation. fun and cartoonish but also brutal.
BTW, game overthinker... if u win this, please buy a better microphone. :)
