It can continue a story, or add more to what happened before hand. If you love a story, then you probably would get the DLC to see what had happened and what is going to happen.
Miss those. But considering the nature of consoles, DLC content would probably be one of the only real ways to bring that Expansion pack style of content to the console.
Looking at this from the standpoint of a guy whose played PC games a lot and bought/used numerous expansion packs for RTS games.
Warcraft 3: The Frozen Throne was the last expansion pack I bought lol, totally worth 30$ I mean new units, new buildings, new functions to the World Editor and a badass story.

Assassin's Creed II is a prime example of taking something out of a game to sell it later on. "corrupted memory", my ass.
They Call Me The Fizz
I remember when these came in their own box...
King Meatball I
Only when it actually adds to the story and isn't something ripped out of the game just to sell later as DLC.

This is only the type of DLC that i usually buy. I don't care for the rest.

Actually... This DLC was actually taken out of the game as it was 'Too big'.

Very much a plus. Remember when these would sometimes be released as their own game called an "expansion pack"?

Frozen Throne was awesome and made of win. :D
So was Brood War and Winter of the Wolf (Starcraft and Battle Realms, respectively).
