I have a theory that his "death" explosion is actually an emergency measure to get him out before he dies, since that only happens to Megaman (or whoever you're playing as) where as the bosses simply explode.
Capcom could have just had Mega Man fall over when he died, but Mega Man wouldn't allow that. He told them, "Fuck dat! I'm goin' out Michael Baysplosion style, bitch!"
I always like to think his "death" is actually an emergency measure to get him out of there before its too late, and the extra lives are data that allow him to teleport back into the stage without having to start over. But that's just my theory.
Thanks :) Yeah there are some small hints to this being the case in the games, like in MM Powered Up, while it could just be because of its cutesy chibi nature, but when you get a game over and return to the sage select, they act as if your lose actually happened and ask if your hurt, unlike in most games where dying and going back is essentially reversing time and doing it again.

Robot heaven wouldn't have blue balls though *rim shot*

Megaman's death is awesome, is what Capcom also thought, so they killed him.

Even Mega Man's atoms are mega-sized. Then again, the same thing happens to the robot masters.

a lot of times, I add that kind of logic to most games I play.

A Game Theory, but seriously I never thought of that before that's pretty nice
