Angry Birds sells a whopping 30 million downloads over Christmas week

1/6/13 11:30am

Editor's Note: People sure love to fling their birds.

The insanely popular bird-flinging mobile series Angry Birds recently reached a milestone over this past Christmas week. In a recent blog, the game's developer Rovio Entertainment released it's sales figures for last week in which they reported that Angry Birds sold 30 million downloads, with 8 million alone on Christmas day.

Another interesting fact, Rovio also said that 17.4 million Android and iOS devices were activated on Christmas day. This means there was at least one Angry Birds download for every new tablet or smartphone activated during the week.

So g1s what do you think? Were you one of the 30 million? Or did 30 million people just waste their money? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!

30 million; shit, man, that's Michael Jackson figures. How much has Thriller sold by now? Guess it sort of make sense that the Jack of video games would start on a friggin' telephone.

As for Angry Birds itself, my problem is that it's too fucking hard, and not in a good way. Makes me wonder how all the non-gamer types put up with it.

Before I played Angry Birds on my friend's phone I thought I was missing out on something great turns out the game is ok at best I don't get why it's so popular.

The angry birds games are fun. I don't know why some people have to judge it just cuz it's a casual game. The are great, simple time killers.

People just don't like it when a game gets too mainstream or popular. So they hate on it. Personally I love Angry Birds. It's a fun game.

The problem isn't that it's a bad game. It's just mediocre. People don't like mediocrity being rewarded in an overblown way, just look at Call of Duty and its backlash. At least both franchises have tried something different recently.

Also, as a Finn, I'm fed up with the birds basically being mascots of our country now. Everything being merchandised as Angry Birds products doesn't help either. I wouldn't really mind so much if it wasn't shoved in my face all the time.

The arrogant attitude in which Rovio says they are the next Disney is so sad it's almost funny. When the movie comes out, I wonder if anybody will care anymore...

Perhaps its mediocre for you, but I find it to be very fun. Also flinging birds at structures and seeing how much destruction you can do is very cathartic, and relieving stress is one of the main purposes of video games.

No offense, but merchandise seems like a pointless thing to complain about. Its really popular so its inevitable it will have products made for it, I don't see anyone complaining about Pokemon and Mario merchandise.

Concerning Rovio, just ignore them. Capcom and Sony have proved that game developers can be total jerks and karma will catch up to them eventually.

Mediocre doesn't mean it's not fun. I like the game somewhat, that's why I said it wasn't bad. It's not something I'd play on my computer (I did try through Chrome), console or a handheld, but it's ok for something that's on a phone. It also has the slight element of luck, which makes it quite addictive along with the star ratings.

However, it isn't anywhere near the quality of a Mario or a Pokémon game, no matter how dwindling their quality might be, and definitely should not be heralded as the flagship of our measly country like a much more important company, Nokia, used to be. The Angry Birds series is essentially like those fun flash games it's based on (with added animals), but I don't see the point in making it the biggest thing out there with the merchandising and such (except of course money). I'd like to be glad for Rovio's success, but they'd have to actually produce something worth the attention first.

And I would try to ignore Rovio, but it's quite impossible here unless I want to spend my life inside my apartment without internet or TV until this fad dies over. Besides, I don't actually hate them, I just have some distaste towards them because of the way they are acting and marketing their products.

PS. Yeah, I know this is a long comment for someone who doesn't hate them. ;)

I don't mind long comments :)

I find the merchandising is more for the characters in the game than for the game itself, you have to admit the Angry Birds (and to a lesser degree the pigs) are very charming and their sounds are funny to listen too. I would not mind there being a cartoon starring those round avians :)

While at first it was kinda charming, it started to annoy me due to hearing the theme and the birds everywhere constantly. Oversaturation killed it for me, just like it did for many others I assume. Which is probably why the overzealous merchandising also bugs me. Doesn't seem to bug my sister though, seeing as she seems to be a fan.

As for the cartoon, there's going to be the CG movie in 2016 and then there was supposed to be an animation series last fall but I'm not sure if it got released since I can only find the announcements about it. There's also been some shorts on their YT channel, I believe.
