Assassin's Creed IV's single player requires an internet connection for next gen consoles

3/6/13 10:00pm

According to Ubisoft, next-gen console versions of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will require an internet connection for the game's single player campaign. The reasoning behind the decision is due to all the social features they are implementing for the game and the PS4 influencing this decision.

Creative Director Jean Guesdon stated:

ACIVBF will also be available on Next Gen consoles. In addition to improved graphics and physic, Next Gen versions will bring to the players new connected features allowing them to feel that even if they remain “Single Player” it will be better to be a “Single Connected Player.” “I mean, that Next Gen Consoles will allow players to have a solo experience that benefit the presence of a huge community.”

They did not clarify if the requirement means an "Always On" connection is needed or if the single player is playable and/or impacted without it.

The PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 versions will not have these features while the Wii U might be affected depending if Ubisoft includes those social features for that version.

This had better not stick around in the 8th generation

Just how are they going to implement this? In Miiverse, you can choose when you want to talk about a game in the middle of your play-session. Will they implement the streaming feature? Ugh, Social Gaming.

So for the single player part, that does not use the internet, requires it. Why?

At least it won't be like the failure that was the launch of Sim City. Shows just how useful an always-online requirement is :V

yeah, it doesn't seem to explicitly state that you need to stay online just that you have to if you want to use the social aspects of the game. Ubisoft is giving you the option to partake in the social aspects of AC4 but they aren't quite on the level of forcing it. Either way, more details will follow as the game nears release.

Article misinterpreted. The article never says that an Internet Connection is a requirement. In fact, think of it like Dark Souls.

People will go online simply to post insanely pointless comments about how DRM is the devil on a less than trivial news article on a gaming website, but when it comes to playing actual games - our most passionate hobby that we've been doing throughout our lifetimes - everyone immediately says NO! Despite the fact that the intention is to make better and more interactive gameplay experiences.

You'd think with that same internet connection people use to make their outcry about "evil DRM", they could instead just play the fucking games...

Or maybe people can't handle technological progression. People need to realize where the future is heading and why. There are reasons they do these advancements, and if you don't see them as advancements, break out the SNES and relive your glory days for the rest of your life while the rest of the world passes you by.

It does not say that it "requires" an internet connection. You misrepresented what he said.

so many wingers, OH NO! not the evil internet connection, which almost every gamer has! ...should only complain if its always on type of drm that kicks you from the game like past PC assassins creed, hell maybe it's optional for the social aspect side (ubisoft has gotten rid of always on btw)
