The Binding of Isaac undergoing a rating change in Germany due to charges of "blasphemy"

2/11/12 10:20pm

The Binding of Isacc has recieved a rating change in Germany. The game was originally given a 12+ (um...why?) but has now been bumped up to a 16+.

Was it due to the graphic violence or the disturbing imagery? Nope. It's because some are offended by the game's take on the biblical Abraham and Isacc story. It was only matter of time before something like this happened.

Here's what creator Edmund McMillen had to say about the whole situation:

"Turns out Isaac is the 1st and only game to ever get its rating raise to 16 because of "Blasphemy" it actually had a 12+ 1st.."

Well, if your game is the first ever to get its rating raised due to blasphemy, you may as well celebrate it...I guess.

Maybe he should give the Guinness people a call.

I suppose that any game where you could walk on water would get you the same treatment?

impious utterance or action concerning God or sacred things. 2. Judaism . a. an act of cursing or reviling God. b. pronunciation of the Tetragrammaton (YHVH) in the original, now forbidden manner instead of using a substitute pronunciation such as Adonai. 3. Theology . the crime of assuming to oneself the rights or qualities of God. 4. irreverent behavior toward anything held sacred, priceless, etc.: He uttered blasphemies against life itself.

Does the game match up with any of these definitions? If so, it is blasphemous and the rating is totally appropriate. If not, then someone needs t relax. I haven't played the game myself, so I wouldn't know.

It's already kinda odd that a game like The Binding of Issac got the equivalent of the Teen ratings for Europeans, but it seems just weird to bump up a game's rating just because did doesn't match your religious views. It's good to give people a heads-up for something that may offend them, but labeling it as "blasphemy" is in bad taste.

guys. an explanation how it works. in US sex is a problem in Media, in germany its ok. in US violance is OK in media, in germany its a big problem. Many games, movies etc.. geting banned because of that. in germany women can have big boobs in every game, in US Conan has to look at tennisballs. there is no world standard for rating. htere is an European standard, but in germany it doesnt count (why i dont know).

and of course there is allways the church, the jewish ones and black, hispanic, and what not "syndicates" getting pissed if they dont like something.
