BIT Parts Commentary: Episode 105 (Red Dead Redemption)

12/13/12 2:30pm
tl;dr

This episode of BIT Parts was inspired by the Cougar Man video I watched and loved from YouTube. I also want to make clear that I'm not trying to make fun of games with glitches. Patching games is simply the agents' job.

BIT Parts Commentary: Episode 105 (Red Dead Redemption)

Red Dead Redemption is easily in my top 5 games of this console generation. I loved everything about it and I played the living crap out of it. All that being said, when the game was released, YouTube was littered with videos showing off crazy game glitches. A lot of them invovled human character models being given animal A.I.'s. There's plenty of videos about flying "bird" people and horse and donkey humans you could actually ride on. But the cream of the crop for me, was Cougar Man

The Cougar Man video, uploaded by YouTube user WhereDaBootz, put me in stitches. Just seeing this weird human character model crawl around on its knees and attack the player was hilarious. Then the guys playing the game and reacting to their find was amazing too. It was just too funny.

So of course, me being me, I wanted to sneak a "monster" episode into the first 6 BIT Parts. When I decided that the agents main job was to "patch" glitches and games, I wanted to do it in a more visceral way. I liked the idea of the agents using crazy plasma electic guns to patch games. I think of it as the Toy Story mentality. When I'm sitting there waiting for my Xbox to download an update for a game to fix bugs, this is what I imagine happening. The agents are in there blasting bugs and glitches with a code fixing plasma rifle.

To me, this episode is sort of the climax of the first 6. One finally explodes on Zero and demands answers. We see how in the dark he really is. I just love their opening argument and then I love the flip side of that in the end of the episode. All Agent One as really seen is this rebelious Agent Zero who he doesn't think does her job well. Then she freakin' owns that cougar man attack and saves Agent One from it. For the first time, he respects her.

Now, I never wanted the show to be about making fun of 'broken" games. I don't want it to become mean spirited and make jabs at the games themselves. I just wanted to set up what the agents' are suppose to be doing, patching games. The show is ultimately about gamers and what we do in these worlds and the reprocussions of our actions.

Hopefully, people don't think I'm making fun of the games. That's not my intention. I want to make fun of gamers. Why? Cause I'm a gamer and I feel comfortable making fun of myself.
