Capcom trademarks "Mega Man" in the U.S.

9/14/12 8:04pm
tl;dr

Capcom trademarked "Mega Man" and with it gained the rights to video games, music, motion pictures, and other various entertainment outlets.

Here are the exact entertainment medias that Capcom has gained the rights to with this trademark.

"Providing computer games to others that may be accessed via the Internet; Providing non-downloadable Internet games to others; Providing electronic games for mobile phones and smart phones via the Internet; Providing images, motion pictures, video games, music videos and music via the Internet; Providing images, motion pictures, video games, music videos and music through communication via mobile phones and smart phones; Electronic publishing services, namely online publication of the text and graphic works of others featuring computer and video games and strategies thereof, not downloadable; Providing on-line non-downloadable newsletters in the field of computer games and video games; Providing on-line non-downloadable electronic publications and documentation, namely articles and reports featuring computer game strategy and video game strategy"

This is quite interesting, especially since Capcom of America has stated that they intend to host their own celebration for the blue bomber. Honestly, I've never been the biggest Mega Man fan, but I greatly enjoyed the X series, Battle Network, and Legends games. It'd be good to see some sort of announcement.

Keep in mind though, this has just been trademarked, if this acts as the usual Capcom routine when it comes to trademarking we won't hear any news for a while (EX. Asura's Wrath and Dragon's Dogma).

Sadly I wouldn't be surprised if they trademarked him just so they can keep him dead and no one else can bring him back.

Did I read this right? Capcom is now "trademark"ing Mega Man when they already did so back in the NES/Famicom days?

September 14, 2012 - 11:30pm

Well, you have to renew trademarks over time, but what I think is most suspicious is that it's only Capcom of America with the rights. Last time something like this happened we got the Street Fighter 4 series.
