Capcom VP says there is too many Mega Man "Sub-Brands" for a Reboot

9/9/12 6:00pm

Editor's Note: The only way a Mega Man reboot would work is if all of the sub-series were discontinued and removed from the continuity but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

If you were hoping for Mega Man  to go back to his roots then you'll be disappointed, beacause according to a VP at Capcom, a reboot of the franchise is very unlikely.

In a recent "ask Capcom" community forum post titled- "How about a Reboot to the MM Legend franchise into a new entry in the MM franchise" Capcom USA vice president Christian Svensson weighed in and discussed why he thinks a Reboot of Mega Man's beginnigs wouldn't work...

"I (and probably I alone so please don't ascribe said belief to "Capcom") think one of the problems MM has had as a brand is that we've had too meny competing splinter sub-brands within it. I'm not sure starting yet another is the way to get the franchise as a whole back on track more then creating greater brand confusion but we'll take it under advisement."

As of now there are 7 Sub-series in the Mega Man  franchise which are: the orginal Mega Man  games, Mega Man X, Zero, Battle Network, ZX and Star Force. However, only 6 of these franchises have produced a game in this console genoration.

With all of these series it's a nightmare for fans to keep track of them all, but for Capcom their problem is that they haven't seen any substantial profit from these games. And according to a majority of sources, a Mega Man game hasn't sold over a million copies in almost a decade.

As for Mega Man 9  and 10, Capcom said that they were "pleased" with how both games preformed. Although they never released the sales numbers for either game, Capcom did go on to say that MM9  is the best selling game on the Wiiware service.

So, what do you think g1s? Is Capcom making the right move? or are they giving the middle finger to the fans once again? Let me know in the comments!

I think what they're trying to say is, "Well we lost Inafune so we don't know how to continue Megaman"

they shoulda just kept it simple and stuck with original mega man and MMX. Zero, ZX (and trust me, I loved the hell out of ZX personally), and ESPECIALLY Star Force were over-kill. Volnut should have been more popular than it actually was (but at the time of its release there was too much competition when 3D gaming was really starting to find itself for that game to stand out), and battle network was a cute idea so I can't knock it much. Plus they made TOO many games for these subseries. But that's capcom, milk the hell out of a franchise till it's dead (*cough* street fighter and resident evil) and unfortunately mega man was the first to go..

What a load of horse crock Capcom is trying to pass on us... In Fact Capcom doesn't want to make a sequel, reboot, or a spinoff sell the whole franchise to someone else who would.

Mr. Svensson has a point: Megaman has spawned countless spinter sub-brands within itself, and this isn't counting the non-canon games, either. There's nothing wrong with this, of course; many successful franchises have branched off into many sub-genres, regardless of the medium. That being said, this isn't a good enough reason to leave the Megaman franchise as is. Contrary to what Capcom -no, what Mr. Svensson- may think, Megaman has a lot of potential left in it. The fact that people have reacted so vehemently at, let's be honest, what amounts to a series of poorly-timed and ill-advised announcements should've clued you in at how much love the fans and the gaming community have for the Blue Bomber.

This is a very critical moment for Capcom. No matter what choice they make now, they've already lost. It's only a matter of time before we see them lose money, fans, or both over this and future decisions regarding Megaman's ultimate fate as a franchise.
