[CES] Nyko is fixing the Wii U GamePad’s Shortcomings

1/10/13 1:02pm

If there is one bad thing I can say about the Wii U’s new GamePad, it’s that the battery life sucks. Just this past weekend, my brother and his roommate came by for an extended NintendoLand session and after about 4 hours, the GamePad died. Nyko was apparently aware of this and has two ways to address this issue.

The first one is the sexier of the two simply replacing the existing Nintendo battery with a Nyko one called the Power Pak. What’s the secret? Nintendo didn’t use the entire space available in the battery bay, where Nyko’s does. The other is an attachment called U Boost which attaches to the bottom of your GamePad and comes with a kickstand.

Both will be available for $24.99 next month, offering around 10 hours of battery life, and both will still fit in your Wii U charging cradle. I opened the GamePad at the office and sure enough, there is space for the Power Pak, so that seems like a good bet. I wonder what would happen if I used both?!

I have no problem with the whole thing about this game pad, except that of the battery, just like what you said. - Scott Sohr

I play near an outlet all the time so I don't need this

The really question is how long will it last I got a Nyko wii remote chareger before it worked for a while and then it craped out and wouldn't charge right any more so I am not sure if I can trust this thing.

I watched a report on this and it said the external U Boost thing doubles the battery lifespan, whereas the internal battery replacement triples it.

I set the brightness of the pad to it's lowest setting and it's still bright enough for me and saves a lot of battery life. So at the moment I'm good. I never run out of juice while playing.

Good to know there is a battery pack out there if I need it though :)

Don't do it Sean. It would be too much power for any mortal to handle.

Ehh...my couch is right next to a power outlet so it doesn't effect me that bad...now If I move and there isn't one then yes this looks good

Definatly going to get the Power Pak. The U Boost looks a little clunky to me.
