[Community Showcase] - Rare believes they haven't "fallen off of the map"

9/16/11 12:00pm

In a recent interview with Industry Gamers, Rare's new studio leader Scott Henson (who is a 16 year Microsoft veteran) said that Rare has not "fallen off of the map".  Henson goes on to talk about Kinect Sports , which sold over 3 million copies,  saying,

“fallen off the map is interesting when you sell over three million units, I like that falling off the map. It’s great success in this industry.”

Mr. Henson is optimistic about the future of Rare and Kinect Sports. He concludes by  saying

"We delivered as much to the platform as any other studio. With the success of Kinect Sports and what I believe will be a successful Season Two, I think Rare lived up to its potential... The title itself is about connecting people to video games. It’s a new Rare. It’s an exciting place to push boundaries for what’s possible.”

So with the days of Donkey Kong and Killer Instinct  in the rear view mirror, what is your opinion on Rare? Is Kinect Sports really enough to carry Rare to the future, or is Rare gasping for their last breath of air? Let us know what you think in the comments.

The old rare we knew and love back in the 90's got it's soul sucked out by micro-suck and then replaced with some creepy all ways smiling Child rapist with a tight pair of short short's and a bowl cut..... 3Million copys of a stupid sports game.... Go the Fk out side damn it >_>

The new rare... is goint to work just fine as long as the"hardcore" gamers don't expect anything good coming from them and they continue to produce casual titles, that casual gamers buy and play; so Henson is right they're just a different company now and i don't think they're off the map...

The problem that Rare has with Kinect isn't the sales, obviously it's very popular, but keep in mind that most of the people buying it isn't the same people who bought Banjo and Kazooie, Cronker, Goldeneye, and DK Country years ago. In fact I bet most (casual playing) people who bought the Kinect had no idea that Rare has anything to do with it. I know this because when I went I went to Best Buy, one of their employees was showing me the Kinect so he can get me to buy it, but when I asked him if Rare developed the Kinect, he didn't have a clue. He thought it was all Microsoft that created the technology. And compared to people back in the 90's who would know what Rare Ware is, that's preety sad.

"It’s a new Rare." I think that's all that needs to be said.
