[Community Showcase] - Rare believes they haven't "fallen off of the map"
In a recent interview with Industry Gamers, Rare's new studio leader Scott Henson (who is a 16 year Microsoft veteran) said that Rare has not "fallen off of the map". Henson goes on to talk about Kinect Sports , which sold over 3 million copies, saying,
Mr. Henson is optimistic about the future of Rare and Kinect Sports. He concludes by saying
So with the days of Donkey Kong and Killer Instinct in the rear view mirror, what is your opinion on Rare? Is Kinect Sports really enough to carry Rare to the future, or is Rare gasping for their last breath of air? Let us know what you think in the comments.
Oh rare how I miss the N64 days
Rare, you haven't fallen off the map in terms of games sold, you fell off the map in the eyes of gamers. You made games we loved as children and now that Microsoft sucked you into the fold, all you make are casual games that are nowhere near the high caliber we expected from you. Rare disappointed everyone everywhere by breaking up with Nintendo only to become Microsoft's bitch. Hopefully they will see the error of their ways...
i just want them to announce if they will make a New Banjo game that isn't a car based game or have Nuts and Bolts types of graphics. i just want my childhood to have some closure here...
If I had 3 wishes from a genie one would be give back rare to nintendo..... I miss RARE :.(
Yeah it's enough to carry themselves, but if they want to make some real money, they need to make non-casuals their audience.
Let's face it, any fucking company can stick a piece of shit in a case, slap the words 'Move', 'Kinect', or 'Sports' and idiot parents will buy it.
Most industries have figured out by now that there are two audiences, casuals, and gamers. Anyone could design games for casuals.
Thing is Rare, no one knows you made those games. Everyone sees the Microsoft logo, and absolutely no one knows who you are. You're alive because of Microsoft, and you remain the worst game dev in the industry, If Microsoft wasn't backing them, they'd have died years ago.
You're dead to me Rare.
This is it, Rare died to me
Rare is sucking bad
Dude Just Remake BATTLETOADS!!!
Rare should never have left Nintendo. They're decisions are very negative. The only good Rare games on 360 are Perfect Dark and Banjo Kazooie. I am surprised that they might bring back Conker. They needed to bring him back. And what's with the Kinect? It's a total failure from day 1. It rips off the Wii and has really bad controls that makes you look like an idiot. At least with the Wii people know you are using a controller.
While I resent Rare's new direction with the Kinect, I'm of the belief that if their fans would actually support them instead of bitching day and night about how 'Banjo's not supposed to drive a kart, despite premiering in a kart-racing game,' and 'Conker: Live and Reloaded sucked because they changed the multiplayer, rabblerabblerabble" they might actually see incentive to pursue their older games. Perfect Dark on the XBLA? Better than the original. Their remake of Jetpac? Really fun if you like old-school arcade games. They've obviously still got what it takes to make good games, so why is everyone jumping down their throat at every turn?
Let's not forget that Microsoft basically strangleholds their developers into doing their dirty work, and they don't give very much free range to devs that work on their console (the fact that they've supposedly given 343 complete creative control over the Halo series is hard for me to believe). You can't really condemn Rare for being forced to create casual games. Hell, tons of people have left the company due to Microsoft's borderline-communist-toward-their-developers business ethic. Sadly, Rare doesn't have much choice in the matter if they want to stay in business. It does raise the question why they haven't made any games for the DS, however, since Microsoft can't really intervene due to them not having a handheld (which as I understand it is a loophole in exclusivity contracts) but then again their staff isn't exactly filled to the brim as I said before, which is why they can't make as many games as before while still doing Microsoft's "bidding."
Not to say that Rare can do no wrong, 'cause as with any other "veteran" developer they've fucked up plenty, but I think at this point people are just scrambling for reasons to hate them without actually playing the games or otherwise knowing what they're talking about. Kinect Sports is realistically one of the best games on the semi-platform that is the Kinect, so his logic isn't really that unfounded, and he's hardly acting like the dipshit that was trying to defend Hydrophobia by insulting the intelligence of reviewers. Personally I don't see why this interview is even worth bringing up, but that's just me.
Yknow what other game sold highly? Wii Play.
Dominated your logic.
I miss old Rare
I actually liked Kinect Sports...
Someone should screen cap the comments and send them right back to Rare. This is what we mean by falling off the map.
Rare, this interview made me cringe, you only put out ONE game that sold 3 million in the past like billion years. Unlike those games you put out like every year once or twice that set standards for the system, once you got bought by microsoft, you put out zero games that anyone is glad they have. PDzero was crap compared to PD, Nuts and Bolts was not Banjo Kazooie, Ghoulies, umm need I say more. Yes Spots sold 3 million but youd be suprized that a lot of shit games sell really well. Homefront cough cough. It doesnt help establish image, it establishes that you dont give a shit as long as you fuck the system for money
How can everyone see the problem with Rare, except Rare themselves?
Rare is in denial. How sad.
For F" sakes make the games the industry has yearning for, freaking look at my avatar! you guys need to not focus so much on wats mainstream, just go crazy like you did with conker! everyone loved that game (not the remake though) just do us a favor and go back to your roots....
