Disney has decided to close Epic Mickey developer Junction Point

1/29/13 3:02pm

It is no secret that Epic Mickey 2 was not the shining success Disney hoped it would be. Despite releasing on FIVE platforms, the game has yet to clear a million units in North America and the franchise as a whole hasn’t fared much better. So it should come as no surprise that the developer, Junction Point Studios, has been officially shuttered by Disney in the following statement.

"It was with much sadness that we informed our teams today of changes to our Games organization, which include the closure of Junction Point Studios... We're extremely grateful to Warren Spector and the Junction Point team for their creative contributions to Disney with Disney Epic Mickey and Disney Epic Mickey 2."

The team was sent home for a two month break after release and I suppose Disney figures it’s easier to tell them they’ll never have to go back to work there again. While I had high hopes for the original, my experience was so toxic that I never went back. I suppose everyone else felt the same way based on sales figures.

It's sad that they all lost their jobs sure but a part of me isn't too sad to see epic mickey go. I was really looking forward to that 3ds game in particular until I heard how short and grindy that game ended up being.

Man I liked the Epic Mickey games. Yeah the Epic Mickey games had some faults but most games do. Tom while I do agree that porting the the first Epic Mickey to the PS3 & 360 might have helped, but I don't think implementing the PS Move or the Kinect would help. Especially considering that trying to use the Move on a game like Okami HD is like trying to pull teeth with a pipe wrench.

I am a little sad about this. But, I didn't like Epic Mickey. Epic Mickey 2 for the Wii was better, but just okay. I was hoping a third one would be even better.

i'd feel bad but anyone should have seen this coming from a mile away, hopefully those folks can find a new place to work but with so many developers going under i get the feeling that nobody is really hiring anymore

Not a big Disney fan and never really played the games, but I feel bad for those who did enjoy the Epic Mickey series.

It's a bit ironic that going multiplatform made it sell worse. Guess word got around that it wasn't great. Either way it's when a developer has to close its doors for the final time.
