Disney reportedly spent $100 million on Infinity, passed on Iron Man and Star Wars games
Disney Interactive’s answer to the widely popular Skylanders series is apparently an example of the company going all in, as a recent report reveals Disney has spent big bucks developing Infinity.
According to WSJ, Disney Infinity has cost well over $100 million to develop both the game and the line of toys that goes with it. However, while this may seem like a rather risky bet, the other videogame/toy series on the market – Skylanders – has brought publisher Activision in over $1.5 billion.
Robert Iger, Disney’s current CEO, commented on the upcoming game saying, “If Infinity does well, it bodes very well for the bottom line of this unit. If it doesn’t do well, the opposite will be the case.”
Furthermore, the report reveals an interesting fact regarding games in Disney Interactive’s other franchises. Both Iron Man and Star Wars games were reportedly passed on while developing Infinity – the former would have likely been based off this year’s Iron Man 3 movie, while the ladder could be anyone’s guess.
