Doom 3 Source Code to be Released Soon

11/1/11 9:00pm

According to a Tweet by John Carmack himself, the source code of Doom 3 will be released into the wild very soon, just as promised at Quakecon 2011:

"doom 3 source is packaged and tested, we are waiting on final lawyer clearance for release." -John Carmack

It's great that id Software is so open-minded about their games and intellectual property. I can't wait to see what the community will come up with once they get their hands on this. I foresee a remake of the original Doom based on the engine of Doom 3.

Aw man...now I need a change of pants.

I'm gonna laugh if Zenimax swoops in at the last minute and obstructs its open source release... Cause if they DO they can kiss id goodbye...

That might be a given, though I do not recall Zenimax owning Doom 3 at the time so it's not likely they would cease and desist. But personally, Carmack always did promote the idea of releasing source codes to foster the modding community.

I actually am curious, but I mess with the Unreal Engine regularly with the UDK - Carmack, while your code is awesome, I have to say...late release. Still, I shall give the Code a whirl. Maybe I can pick up a few tricks from id. :P

Somehow I don't see this code setting the modding world on fire like previous id codes have

A remake of the original Doom in Doom 3 has been out for quite a while.

Unbelievably sweet! I imagine the modding community will make miracles with this.

This is one of the reasons people have a lot of respect for John Carmack and id Software. Say all you want about RAGE or their activity in the past decade, but they cater to the community and they let us play around with their amazing tech.

RAGE doesn't look too bad personally. Needed some extra work, but I think it's an alright game.
