Dragon's Dogma! = Dark Souls? + Dragon Age? = Awesome!?
Dragon's Dogma, a new RPG that should be checked out by dedicated fans of the genre. Its has combat that reminds me of Dark Souls, along with much if its difficultes brought in a new light due to the player not being prepared or under leveled. It has the 3 extra character slots that dragon age poses but lacks the ablitiy to play as them which would help improve the game so much more. Last of all its reminds me of D&D and those who enjoy that may find this game interesting as well.
Dragon's Dogma is Capcom newest game to be released as of May 22nd here in the United States. Ive have played the game now for 24 hours and id like to throw in my two cents on the subject and tell you how a dedicated but forgiving RPG freak thinks of this new addition to the genre.
My first thoughts lingered right to that of Demon's Souls, and Dark Souls as the combat (atleast for Fighters) reminds me of the combat of these respected games and don't be fooled as the Difficutly matches it well enough though i do not think it was 100% intended to be that way at times. There is no scaleing in this game i can tell you that right off the bat (which i like, makes the world feel more real when things are super weak, or super powerfull against you) but not in all the best ways as some of the earlyest quests i come across requires me to bust through 3 trolls twice my height and 50 times my power or an army of bandits some of which are way to powerfull to be bandits and sometimes these required exploits to get past (trolls for example, useing your Y or /\ while climbing on the trolls back when it jumps backwards to squish you under him, you will do jump off with a down slash and then be able to get in 15 more hits cause there is no recovery time when hitting the ground. So unlike Dark Souls i rarily feel equiped for the task ahead without grinding in early game quests.
My second thoughts hit Dragon Age as the pawns that fallow you remind me of a very custumizble version of the characters in Dragon Age but with no really, really big flaw. you can not control them AT ALL from what i've found.. the best you can do is tell them to "go" "help" and "Come".. i could think of so many better stratiges with the troll if i could control the mage of my group as the Troll easily catches fire but he was way to busy with healing plus the fact that when your character dies its game over (unless you have a special stone on you).
Another fault which should of been in the game, should be the ability to go on quests with your friends Split screen (yea developers we fucken want it). and or Online.. but the best you can do is download characters that other people created to be your pawns.. so its lacking there were it could of been absolutly genious.
So overall though it has been very entertaining if not difficult and i do reccomend it to those D&D and RPG fans as its only real problems is it difficutly and its lack of some good modes and abilites.. but then again im very forgiving in RPGs...

Do the pawns interact with the player ? Do they have personalities and such I mean ?
Kailoli
as for your first question, you don't really have interaction with them. You can't start up conversations but you can go up to them and get them to say something. They'll either say something about the quest, where you are, or something really general. Sometimes, depending on the quest, your pawn can do an information dump/backstory on som characters which is neat. Makes me want to walk slower so I can hear it all :)

I completed the game a couple days ago and while I can say that each Pawn does not have a unique personality, they can have their own little quirks. For example, a pawn I hired (a level 50 ranger) would say cocky things after we defeated an enemy ("of course we defeated him, I was here", etc) and my pawn did several funny things. One of which would be when somone in my party died, he would pick them up and bring them to me and then run off and fight. Or if I were in a fight, he would try picking them up and dropping them, I guess thinking that's how you revived them. There was also this one point where my mage doused an area in poison, in which my pawn grabbed a knocked down enemy and brought them into the poison mist and held them there until they died. So while they don't have unique personalities per se (only a few set ones you do yourself) they start learning quirks off of what you do a lot. It's neat

That's better than what I thought it would be actually, especially the part about the quirks that they can learn, it sounds like an awesome concept!
Thanks for the long answer, I'll will pick this up right after I finish Yakuza: Dead Souls, I've been wanting a interesting RPG that sort of also plays like Monster Hunter for a while now and it looks like one of Capcom's better offerings this generation.
Thanks again!

no problemo :) I hope you enjoy the game as much as I do :) and if you have an Xbox, add me and you can use my pawn for free :D

I would take you up on your offer, but sadly I only own a PS3 :P
Thanks for the offer though, I'd seriously loan you my pawn if I had an X-Box :)

That's what Screwattacks all about, making friends (and rivals) with gamers from all over the world!
Thank you for being the catalyst of the topic Zetra3!

Ok this is were the Pawn system gets neat. No pawn has a "personalty" per say but they are only interested in learning and helping there master. So lets say you complete a quest a pawn will usually say "Ive learned how to do this quest, and or ive learned of these beasts". When someone uses your pawn VIA online and adds them to there party, they can interact with your pawn and they will give Quest hints and monster weakness to said player, and it also works the other way around. If someone uses your pawn on a quest you never have done your pawn would like to give you info on that quest when you finally get around to doing it. Other wise talking to pawns yield little and they usually talk and give you info about the world as you travel.

Hmmm that does sound interesting, this mechanic reminds me of something, I just can't put my finger on what it is though... not Pokemon or Digimon or Dark Souls, it's something that had these mechanics...or I could be mistaken.
Well, I will actually consider putting the game into my 'To buy' list, I just have one more question, has Capcom been abusing the DLC for this game ? Or do they plan to ?
Again, seems like an interesting game, I'm just apprehensive when it comes to Capcom these days for various reasons, one of these is DLC, which I am not fond of unless it's good quality stuff, like the ones for Fallout 3 or Borderlands.
