EA closes PopCap Dublin and we all become a bit depressed

9/24/12 3:00pm

When EA took control of PopCap last year, we hoped for the best. I mean, EA doesn’t have the greatest track record for keeping studios they purchase open. And with that we receive a tweet from PopCap’s associate producer John Vaughan “it’s official, Popcap Dublin is now closed :(.”

While this was forecasted a bit by EA’s Frank Gibeau when he said they might have “duplicative roles”, I am sure the 96 people affected feel otherwise. At least in PopCap’s official statement, EA is providing “outplacement support and many employees have offers in other parts of PopCap, at EA or new opportunities with technology partners in Ireland.” This is not limited to, but may include the additional 300 positions they created at the EA European Customer Experience Center in Galway.

Hopefully everyone lands on their feet.

And so passes another victim of EA, the Bluebeard (story version or historical base) of the video game industry.

well damn, another company killed off by EA. It's only a matter of time Bioware gets the same treatment.

I disapprove of this

When the announcement was made I knew this would eventually happen, it would be just a matter of how long. They're doing it to get a hold of the IPs and then systematically close each portion of the company down. I wonder where Greg Canessa is right now.

I wouldn't be sad if Pop Cap closed down for good. I wouldn't have to see any news about them milking PvZ on whatever new gizmo comes out.

EA, you sick, murdering bastards!! Slaughtering single-player(-only) games, and companies you buy, left and right.....No wonder everyone hates EA as much as that one Japanese company who fucks up all of their franchises...

EA should really stop buying companies.
