EA has decided to put Medal of Honor out of its misery after Warfighter’s sales flounder

1/31/13 3:01pm

So EA is deciding to pull the plug of one of its many FPS franchises, Medal of Honor. The rejuvenated franchise coming from Electronic Arts had not one, but two opportunities to find and audience. Something which it apparently failed at. EA’s COO Peter Moore explains the situation to investors

"We struggled with two challenges: the slowdown that impacted the entire sector and poor critical and commercial reception for Medal of Honor Warfighter… Medal of Honor was an obvious miss. The game was solid, but the focus on combat authenticity did not resonate with consumers… Critics were polarized and gave the game scores which were, frankly, lower than it deserved"

The both games were developed by a new EA studio, Danger Close. Hopefully the result of this franchise giving up the ghost won’t correlate into more layoffs. I’ve written about those enough over the past few weeks. As for the FPS genre, I feel like between Crysis 3, Battlefield 4, and just maybe Homefront 2 (Crytek owns it, but they may need a publisher); EA won’t leave you wanting for more FPS’.

EA, once again, murdered another great franchise.

I can't help but wonder what Steven Spielberg would think if he saw what the franchise he helped create has become.

MoH: Warfighter sucked because it tried too hard to copy the formula set out by Call of Duty and tried to make it as cinematic as possible thus sacrificing whatever fun is to be had. Had the devs try to do their own thing with Warfighter, I am sure the game would at least get lukewarm reviews.

I liked the reboot even though the MP was awfully broken upon release, warfighter on the other hand just felt like a bit of a mess during the beta.

In a world of CODs and battlefields it will take something special to try to be a bit of both and succeed. I felt that homefront was a very good game also but in the industry nowadays there is simply not enough room for all these modern FPS IPs to survive. I am hoping that crytek can make it work though as it did succeed in having a good MP portion... man did I go on rambling.

They shouldn't be too hard. It had nothing to do with the fans or the critics. It was all how they went about the development stage, if it was given another 6 months to a year, the game would have no problems besides being generic.
