EA outlines battle plans for their Frostbite engine
According to people from EA, their Frostbite 3 engine is going to be entirely capable of running on the Xbox 360 and PS3, despite its tremendous power. EA also announced the creation of a modified Frostbite 3 engine called "Frostbite Go", to be made for Android and iOS devices. In addition, all future Star Wars games made by EA will be powered by Frostbite.
Yes, in case you didn't notice, they aren't making, nor will ever be making, Frostbite for the Wii U. EA said that, when testing with the Wii U, they experienced some "not too promising results" simply with Frostbite 2.Yes, this will mean no future Star Wars games or any of EAs triple A titles. Despite the fact they showed footage of Battlefield 3 running just fine with the Wii U at E3. On Frostbite 2. Two years Ago. When the Wii U wasn't even in Alpha.
They are being dishonest about because they are mad and want Nintendo to look bad.
EA is basically saying fuck nintendo because they didnt want to use their terrble online system "from what I heard of origin anyway" that is pretty petty considering most of there games need origin to even play it BF3 prime example.
The below link gives a pretty good nuanced history about the state of Nintendo EA relations. However Sean is right, this wasn't a technical decision, it was a business decision. I am puzzled at why the they are being needlessly dishonest about it. It reinforces EA's image of being unscrupulous company to consumers, and sure doesn't help it relations with Nintendo either.
And nothing of value will be lost because EA as a company deserved nor intrigued my money.
I said before and I'll say it again. EA is already getting an early start for that "Worst Company of the Year Award" three times running.
Screw you EA
No EA games for Wii U? Oh well, I prefer Mario sports anyway.
That Battlefield 3 footage at Nintendo's conference was never running on a Wii U. Nobody said it was. It was definitely implied, but Reggie even admitted later that the footage shown was all from PC builds because Wii U hardware wasn't totally finalized at the time. You can even see the Fraps watermark at the top of the Ghost Recon: Future Soldier footage.
That said, you're right. If they can make a version of Frostbite for mobile, it should by all means be possible to make one for Wii U, even if it's a specialized version. It sounds like EA just doesn't think it would be profitable to bother developing for it.
It also explains why I plan to shit on every single desk in EA before my mortal time here draws to a close.
If you believe the stories around the WiiU's Developement and EA's involvement with it, like I do, I would say its probably the latter.
Basically it goes like this. EA had pledged their full support for the platform, that much is public record. However behind the scenes EA was helping Nintendo develop the system's online infrastructure. However their support was evidently not in good faith as they then tried to preasure Nintendo into using Origin for its Online Component/Functionality & Store but Nintendo refused as they had their own plans for that. It would explain why EA suddenly EA pulled its pledged support for the system & has been boycotting it ever since. It also explains why even though EA stated that the WiiU couldn't handle the CryEngine 3, Crytek themselves said it could and that they Crysis 3 up, running on it, and ready to go for the WiiU but were blocked from releasing it. It would also explain why Insomniac as well as other EA Partner devs have suddenly decided not to dev for the WiiU.
I'm thinking EA is really really butt hurt by Nintendo
This is shady. Either the engine is so inflexible that it won't allow itself to be adjusted to work on Wii U or EA is holding out. I'm betting the latter.
