EA spent a fortune on Star Wars: The Old Republic's development

1/21/12 1:00pm

Not only is Star Wars: The Old Republic a solid MMO experience, with a world record breaking voice cast/writing team, but it also has a budget of epic proportions.

According to a report in the L.A. Times, SWTOR cost EA roughly $200 million and counting to develop. I say and counting considering that BioWare will be developing  add-on expansions down the line.

We all know that developing  a project with the depth and complexity of SWTOR isn't a cheap endeavor, but it could be said that a fair share of that cost could have been the salaries for the 800+ staff it took to complete the game, which is actually a very good thing.

Will the incredibly high investment pay off for the folks over at EA? Well, that all depends on how many of the million registered users remain once the free trail expires. But I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that they will.

Perfect piece of work you have done, this site is really cool with great information. male enhancement Definitely consider that which you said. Your favorite reason seemed to be on the net the easiest factor to consider of. I say to you, I certainly get annoyed even as folks think about issues that they just don't recognise about. You managed to hit the nail upon the highest as smartly|well|neatlyand also outlined out the entire thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will probably be again to get more. Thanks!

Let's hope that this development money was money well spent. So far, it looks like it.

For people who haven't played an MMO before, this game is pretty great. I understand that some veterans think this game is pretty generic but come on, it's only a month old.

This game is already not doing well and it's gonna bomb HARD, then both companies will be forced to merge in order to stay afloat and we'll end up having Madden NFL: Star Wars Edition, Dead Space 4: Jar Jars Vengeance, or a Mass Effect game where Shepard teams up with Ewoks to take down the Reapers once and for all.

What makes you think that this game isn't doing well? They had probably one of the best launches of any MMO to date and it keeps getting really good scores from reviewers. It may have undersold on it's initial goals, but MMO's make their money over a long time period by design and don't depend as much as other games do on immediate payouts. Besides, EA is gigantic, $200 million is nothing to them. And there is no reason why the two companies would ever have to merge, as the only investment that Lucasarts made to it was approving the characters and content so they fit inside the universe, and they are probably making a bigger percentage of the profits than EA is.

Honestly this game is boring. It's as generic as MMOs come. Tried it for a short time and got tired of it in like 2 days.

As an MMO, yes, it's the same as many others. But it's not worse than the top MMOs in that aspect. However, in the storytelling and almost single player aspects, it is above any other MMO currently available.
