Elite is out of the frying pan and into the fire

11/8/11 12:20pm

When we casually mentioned that the Elite service was live a little early yesterday, we didn't imagine that it would be the calm before a storm. With Modern Warfare 3 officially available to the masses, its premium Elite service is struggling to keep up. Beachhead Studio's Head, Chacko Sonny explains their current predicament:

"Registration requests for our new live service Call of Duty Elite are exceeding even our most optimistic expectations, which is creating a bottleneck and some players have not been able to register. If you encounter this issue, please check back here or follow us at @CallofDutyElite on Twitter for live status updates."

Activision and Beachhead are of course working "around the clock" to make sure everyone has the best experience possible, but it seems strange to me that they were not prepared. I always figured pre-orders would be a pretty good indication of who would be interested in Elite and Activision has access to those numbers. Maybe there marketing push for Elite went too well, but in the end, this will be resolved and we will all move on to killing noobs.

I can't get into the Elite site. It's way too slow because of the extreme amount of people trying to simultaneously use it.

Safe to say that I did not expect this.

Meh. I'll stick to Counter Strike 1.6 til CS:GO comes out

i think it's pretty obvious that CoD has beaten Battlefield in terms of sales especially since whatever this elite thing has managed to sell so much

Meh. I'll stick to Unreal Tournament 2000.

LMAO... facepalm. This is why when dealing with server loads its ALWAYS good to over estimate the load you will be dealing with. You would think Devs would have learned thsi by now...

well then again, remember they mustve thought it would be moderate during the beta testing and whoever tend to the elite beta, was the numbers they possibly thought... Meh, it is true to try to overestimate. Sometimes its fine to play safe then know later on during the next CoD will be way better.

If I do recall, Blizzard's WoW servers were overwhelmed at launch. IW and Beachhead would think to have set their expectations a little higher.

Actually, they stated that the total amount actually exceeded their most optimistic preparations.
