Feminist Frequency’s lack of content spurs angry reddit thread

1/28/13 4:12pm

Right around the end of the SGC Kickstarter, Anita Sarkeesian was trying to Kickstart her own project, a new study concerning Tropes vs Women in Video Games. This started as a $6,000 Kickstarter that quickly into a $150,000 giant. Due to the overwhelming success, the project evolved from five videos to thirteen and now has both a writer and producer working alongside Anita.

While there have been a few updates exclusively for backers, it has been about 7 months since the Kickstarter finished and about 2 months since the first piece of content, “Damsels in Distress”, was originally planned to be available. Without any public update, the cyber mob has returned via a reddit post questioning what Anita Sarkeesian has done with the money.

With the backers getting regular updates, it seems like the random Internet user’s rage may be unfounded, though standing next to a stack of games isn’t helping to quell the beast. We reached out to Feminist Frequency for comment and received the following.

“There's really nothing to comment about. The greatly expanded video series is in full production and backers are updated regularly on my progress.”

So everyone just cool your jets and hopefully you non-backers will receive an update soon. In the meantime, here is a TED talk she gave last month.

Fuck it they let women play at Augusta, why not let them PC our games all to hell. Hell lets just put Paula Deen on all the covers and bundle in tampon coupons with every game. If people were half as worried about serious issues as they are about coming up with the next incarnation of a less offensive way to say the word retarded, maybe we would actually get somewhere. Every time I hear someone say they are offended, I just want to slap them across the face with a purple dildo.

Moviebob mentions something about these types of tropes in Game Overthinker Ep. 32. If you can recognize a pattern, you can discover a trope. There's no official trope-finding association.

Ah, Anita; promote your kickstarter on trolling board 4chan, block comments an all but a few channels; then watch all comments enter in the kickstarter video; and then conflate trolling comments with threats to shut you down, while completely ignoring if not outright deleting all intelligent criticism; then bring on the crocodile tears and watch the money roll in.

It would be brilliant if it weren't so vile.

Then go make videos, if you even bother with it, that are entirely biased, turn every depiction of a woman into sexist victimization, and ignore those you can't, while completely ignoring the exact same things for men, even that special case not reserved for women where faceless men get gunned down by the millions as the go to goons to kill, treated as mere cannon fodder; and afterward if there even is any peer review allowed it will only be a feminist echo chamber; and all other criticism will be silenced with shaming tactics and dismissed as coming from misogynist, and men that haven't manned up enough to handle "the new reality" and accept their collective burden as evil oppressors.

It what is the mainstream reaction, even on sites for gaming that would actually have enough knowledge to counter this bullshit: "Yay for Anita!", or cowardly not mentioning anything for fear of that label of misogyny.

It would be funny, if it weren't so disgusting.

Could not have said it better myself. I want to say a lot to this, but would mostly be repeating what you've said. Second, if she wants to change this, why does she not change the fundraiser to one where she makes a game which would set an example as she thinks it should be. Now it's just bashing an industry which mainly started with the basic form of "nerd". A type of man I would think she would reject on the fly. Instead she decides to invade this territory without any thought about a retaliation and 'crying' on Ted when it happens.

What I basically have to say is she should change by example, not 'terrorism'.

She has made no points that tv tropes a free website that does this on their our have made themselves and without making shallow strawman arguments.

Anyways tropes are a really shallow concept to begin with...

At first it felt reasonable that there should be a public explanation for not providing content because it would save face for her and kickstarter in general. Then I actually looked into this lady and felt like she was just a giant conartist and that irked me. Plus that photo of her with a ton of games that hurt her points of view doesn't help.

Well, from most of the comments I've read, the g1's have somewhat restored my faith that there are still some reasonable people out there. I was going to go on a rant and list numerous flaws in her arguments but I will sign off with this, the First Amendment to the Constitution gives us all the right of free speech. It does not give you the right to get butt hurt over what is said.
