Find out why the development of the next Smash Bros is impacted by an arm injury

2/28/13 11:00am

Editor's Note: I'm highly hyped up for this installment of Smash Bros. but at the same time, I don't want Sakurai to strain himself with an injury this severe, so I wouldn't mind a longer wait if it meant he'd take some time off.

In a recent Famitsu column, it was revealed the developer behind the upcoming Smash Bros game for the Wii U and 3DS, Masahiro Sakurai, is suffering from a arm injury which looks to be impacting the development of his latest project...

Thanks to Polygon who translated the column, Sakurai described the injury and it’s effect on the future title…

"I think the one word I've said the most this year, by far, is 'Ow! Not only am I getting calcific tendonitis, but they've also found what are apparently several ruptures in the muscles. My upper arm hurts, and there's this chronic dull pain in my elbow joint as well. On the lower arm, there's this feeling of fatigue around the flexor muscles that turns into pain when I use a keyboard or game controller with my fingers.”

The developer then continued on to say how he is unsure when the arm will be fully healed and what kind of impact it will have on the upcoming fighter…

“If this disorder lingers, or if it never gets fixed, there is no telling what impact that would have on the project.”

He then elaborated on the injury’s impact on playtesting the game, as using only one hand when playing can be somewhat difficult when trying to work out a game’s many bugs…

"I've had to control two characters at once in a lot of game projects up to now, so as long as I keep it to simple moves, this works well enough. It doesn't go that easy with the Nintendo 3DS version, though, and the debug camera is pretty hard to control. Still, now I realize how important it is to have your health. I'm glad I'm still in good enough shape to work."

Well, it’s clear to see how dedicated Sakurai is to one of Nintendo’s most beloved franchises, and I for one cannot wait to see the game that will make me give in and finally buy a Wii U. But what do you think g1s? Is Mr. Sakurai pushing himself a little too hard? Or do you believe that a franchise such as Super Smash Bros. deserves the developer’s blood, sweat and tears? Let me know in the comments below!

I'd rather wait longer for the next Smash game than for Sakurai to stress his arm to the point of permanent damage. Not just because I think it would have an affect on the game's quality either.

Quote from the editors note > "... I don't want Sakurai to strain himself with an injury this severe, so I wouldn't mind a longer wait if it meant he'd take some time off." Ditto, ditto & triple ditto!

I think Sakurai should wait for his arm to heal. I don't want him to suffer through the creation of this project.

I dunno if he thought about this, but....maybe have other people actually play the game, and you overlook on them while they're doing it, maybe ask them for their feedback?

This can only mean one thing. They won't have time to put Mario into the game!

I wish him a speedy recovery, but I do need to get this joke in...

Now he knows how I felt playing Kid Icarus: Uprising

I'm pretty sure the fans can wait for Sakurai to get better before we see the game. It's gonna be awesome no matter what, we would just have to wait a bit longer. Not a big deal.

Sakurai I know you don't want to keep us Smash fans waiting but for the love of Christ, take a damn month long vacation or something. You're going to kill yourself!

At this pojnt, just make Sakurai an unlockable character. At least he'd still be involved.

He needs a Maxim Tomato. His health must be at %90. Poor guy, I hope no one sneezes at him in full impact.
