Further sequels for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 not currently planned

3/14/12 2:00pm

There has been an increase in announcements lately regarding the upcoming sequel to Sonic 4: Episode I. The first episode as you might know was a platform video game designed to bring the anthropomorphic hedgehog back to his two-dimensional roots. It did the job reasonably well for the most part, receiving mixed to positive reviews from critics. The second episode is currently being developed by Dimps and Sonic Team for most gaming platforms (except the Nintendo Wii); although an exact release date is not yet known.

Based on recent screenshots and a radical new trailer, the sequel is looking to be pretty good, and the developers have also said in interviews that the controls and physics will be made programmed from the ground up. Hopefully it does end up being a very good game, because there aren't any more episodes being planned it looks like. When interviewed about the possibility for further sequels, producer Takashi IIzuka of Sonic Team had this to say:

"We are looking forward to hearing the feedback from the users for Episode 2, but we are currently not planning to release another episode. We just want to see how the users accept this episode."

But not all hope is lost. The company also mentioned that they were focusing on critical reception and sales numbers, so if you're really interested in seeing further 2D installments from the blue blur, support the team and buy the downloadable game once it comes out. And look! More screenshots! Colors!

Well I still need to play most of the new Sonic games so I can wait.

I'll admit, I was waiting for Episode 1 to go on sale before I bought it. However, I now may have to make an exception.

I'm fine with this decision. I've really enjoyed Episode 1 and 2 looks great. If they want to try something different though, that's their choice.

I wish there was some way to just split the reasonable sonic fans and the ones who keep complaining about how sonic isn't 2d because they just want to feel younger.

I'm a life long Sonic fan. Sega has made some strange choices the last few years, but dammit I hate when so called "fans" and fanboys think they know better. They don't know shit and we won't see an Episode 3 because Sonic won't be blue enough thus it's the worst game ever made. Prove me wrong fanboys. Prove me wrong.

Response to the thumbnail: Dear Fanboys, you may know that SEGA will change a few minor things, but that is not going to help you, because everyone else knows you're going to complain about it. STRANGE ISN'T IT? This is looking pretty good though. I hope the fanboys lay off it this time and that they do make ep. 3.

Seems like "Episode 3" is a tricky word in this day of gaming.

Sonic 4 (plus Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing and Sonic Generations) are the reasons I got back into playing Sonic games! And as such, Sonic 4 Episodfe II will have my full support!

Because think about it, if we don't pay our respects to what put Sonic on the map to begin with, we may get more shitty gimmicks, like Sonic fighting Badniks with a Laser Gun or a Golf Club or some other pointless weapon...

We already got the laser in Shadow the Hedgehog.

I'm going to buy this day one. I really hope they at least make 3 episodes in total, I would love to play as Knuckles in Episode 3.
