g1 Community List: Top 10 16-Bit RPGs!! [Contributors Needed!]

7/20/12 9:00am

Yo g1s! What's up? It's time to start next month's g1 Community List, this time, we are doing  the  g1 Community's Top 10 16-Bit RPGs! Everyone has at least played, or attempted to play through a 16-Bit RPG at least once in their lives. Be it, Final Fantasy IV, or VI, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, Phantasy Star, etc...

Previous g1 Community Lists (In case anyone hasn't seen them yet):

g1 Community's Top 20 Zelda Bosses!!

g1 Community's Top 15 Zelda Dungeons!!

g1 Community's Top 10 E3 Announcmenets!!

g1 Community's Top 15 Fighting Franchises!!

Down below are the guidelines:

1. Introductions.

I'm going to be trying smething new this time around. At the top of your post, write a short introduction for yourself.  Keep it short and simple.  It'll look like this in the blog:

2200

<Insert Introduction Here>

Then after that comes your list...

2. Either down in the comments, or by PM, write me your Top 10, Top 5, Top 3, or how many ever entries you can think of, 16-Bit RPGs.

1. Rank them from the number of entries to 1.

2. Include with each entry: Developer, Publisher and Console.

3. An explanation; your justification for each entry on your list.

4. Just like with any blog, you are indeed allowed to include images/videos in your explanation/justification.

5. Remember to proofread through it after you are done.

6. I usually get a lot of lists were the whole thing is clumped together to form one big wall of text. So remember to hit the return key twice when moving to the next entry. This makes it easier for me to read it.

7. Do not include Honorable Mentions.

8. Any questions? I'll be glad to answer any questions regarding writing the top 10 list. Please don't hesitate to ask.

*Clarification: This list is strictly 16-bit, I'm talking about: SNES, Genesis, Turbo Graphix-16, some of the 16-bit Hand Helds, etc... GBA is a 32-bit system, so it will not be counted, however any 16 bit RPG that was ported to the GBA will be accepted. Also, any ports/remakes of RPGs to 16-bit systems are accepted. For example: Dragon Quest 1-3 enhanced port on the SNES, originally on the 8-bit NES.

3. Optional

This part is optional, so you do not need to do it.

After each entry, youtube link your favourite themes from that specific game. Maximum, 5 favourite themes per entry.

4. How I'm going to rank the final completed list.

I will take every list that has been submitted to me and have it go through my excellently crafted point scoring system. What is my point system you ask? Well here's a simple rundown of it:

Number 10 = 1 point

Number 9 = 2 points

Number 8 = 3 points

Number 7 = 4 points

........

Number 2 = 9 points

Number 1 = 10 points

Each RPG will get a a number of points depending on where on the list it is placed. All the individual points for an item on the list are added to give the final score that game has received. I then rank them accordingly.

5. Essentially how the Blog will look like.

I'll be using the same format as the previous list.

Are Action/RPG's acceptable? What I mean by Action/RPG is that the game has an action-based combat system, but uses statistics (i.e. stats, levels, and experience points) to influence gameplay. Beyond Oasis and Legend of Zelda, A Link to the Past are not considered an Action RPG. Secret of Mana and Illusions of Gaia are action RPG's. The Ys series might or might not be considered an action RPG, but is an RPG nonetheless.

Yes, Action RPGs are accepted.

Ten of them? I have only played two....Super Mario RPG and Secret of Mana. ....unless you count DS or GBA games.

Not to worry, you won't need to do a top 10 list, I'm accepting a minimum of at least one entry.

I was going to participate, but I will unfortunately be busy for the next few weeks.

Let me think here, if you guys want me to be a part of it, I'll try to take some time out of my schedule to do so. but i'm putting my resources on another project, and I have very little time out side of my new work. So I may not be able to be much help... But I will show off my top 3 for the time being.

-Chrono Trigger - Dev/Pub Square - Sys SNES (later ported to PS1 and DS) -A timeless clasic, likable characters, unique environments, revolutionary battle system, beautiful music, and multiple endings. What's not to love?

-Pier Solar - Dev/Pub WaterMelon - Sys Mega Drive/Genesis -Haven't heard of it? Well you probably wouldn't, it came out only at the end of 2010. It is a homebrew game that took 6 years to complete. While it may be new, it's still a 16 bit game, and for a 16 bit game, it is gorgeous. This gem of a game needs more attention, although it's on limited supplies and get's sold out fast when they do get on sale.

-Phantasy Star 2 - Dev/Pub Sega - Sys Mega Drive/Genesis -Everyone knows of the SNES RPGs, but seemingly forgetting about the Genesis RPGs. A shame because Phantasy Star 2, is one of if not the best RPGs in the late 80s. Graphically, nothing on the NES, and for a while later, SNES could match how stunning PS2 looked. But it wasn't all graphics, it had a solid but cruel battle system, and a decent story.
