g1 Community's Top 10 Headlines of 2013!!

1/27/13 8:40pm

Hey there g1s! It's been awhile, but we're back to present the first g1 Community List of 2013! Kicking off this new year with the Headlines of 2013! The ScrewAttack crew, for two years in a row, made the top 10 headlines of 2010 and 2011. In these top 10s, SA would predict what would happen in the respective year. Surprisngly, some predictions actually came true. However, there was no Headlines of 2012, or one for this year. So I decided to take it upon myself to do it, with the help of the g1s.

Last month, I assembled a small team of g1s and for the next few weeks we worked hard putting this list together. Instead of having any amount of g1s send me lists, I made a small team where we discussed about it. It's a new method of making g1 Community Lists that will be used when the regular method cannot be.

Let me introduce you to the news team, Team 2013 Headlines:

2200

"g1 2200 is the guy who manages and writes all the g1 Community Lists, a monthly feature on g1 Features. He likes intereacting with other g1s, be it through social networking, Skype, or g1 After Dark, where he is also a mod at. You'll also find him hanging out on the ScrewAttack g1 Forums, when they aren't down. Many g1s call him by the name "22"."

JETZ.acx

"g1 JETZ.acx, also known as the Jetman, is the man behind g1 Features as a whole, and the main producer and coordinator of the g1 Digital Forecast. A man dedicated towards bringing the community together, JETZ works hard to balance his time between writing tutorials and witty blogs, making kick-ass banners and logos, and video editing for both the Forecast and Flapperdoodle's podcast, SIDETRACKED. An overall great person to talk with, his mind is filled with knowledge, personality, and in many cases, overall insanity."

bigjoe91

"Apart from being extremely intimidated by the curricula vitae seen above, BigJoe91 is a fun loving individual. Going on a year of active membership BigJoe91 is always trying to test out his writing and entertainment skills in the g1 community. A top 10 writer at heart he will not shy away from contributing to any project you want him in. He's also a cat, apparently. Just roll with it."

Flapperdoodle

"g1 Flapperdoodle, nicknamed Flaps, is your good ol' pal from down the block, essentially. He's your friend, he loves to game, and he does whatever he can to make things go smoothly. You can find him posting reviews and lists and other shenanigans on his gaming blog, or talking about gaming and the ScrewAttack community on his podcast SIDETRACKED on g1 Features. He does his best to help out his community in any which way he can. 2012 was a good year for Flaps, as he has now been an official g1 on ScrewAttack for over a year."

Alpha Unit

"Alpha Unit: 1% evil, 99% hot gas"

Kaibaman41

"g1 Kaibaman41,Kaiba for short and Kaibaman21 on the forums.....when their up. He's been on ScrewAttack since 2009 right when the Mega Man Fan Film was put on this site, Good ole Kaiba has been an active member on ScrewAttack since 2011. Maybe you've seen alot of his Blogs on ScrewAttack reporting on game news and even sometimes on politics, but one thing he likes to do is help out his community the best way he can. 2012 has been really good, besides making news on games and lot of his content front paged. It's been his mission to help out the g1 community the best way he can as of late by not only making news stories but by helping out in collabs such as the one your reading right now."

CommanderZaktan

"Greetings all, I’m CommanderZaktan. I’m a regular G1 and I enjoyed video games as a kid. Now I’m just learning how to do countdowns on this site and YouTube and planning a career of making video games. My first forum to sign in is VGLan, but it was shutdown due to some issues. I've been here in this site since last year or 2 years ago. Now I'm just posting news and videos on this site."

Each entry will have comments from the team; it'll be sort of like a conversation between us. The first post for each headline will be the story; every comment after that will either be a response to the main story, response to someone else's comment, an addition to the story, or an alternate take.

For this list, there will be no points displayed, or Honorable Mentions.

Hope you all enjoy this Top 10!

10. Nintendo Announces New 3DS Phone

JETZ.acx

"After years of being pressured by investors to enter the mobile market by making games for iOS and Android, Nintendo decided it was time to give consumers their own version of a smartphone. Enter the Nintendo 3DS Phone, a smartphone that doubles as a Nintendo 3DS. While DS support has been removed due to production costs, the 3DS Phone gains MiiVerse support, tons of integrated apps for several services, and an expanded eShop, plus the ability to do everything a typical smartphone would do...except perhaps getting an actual multi-touch screen and a robust library of apps people expect from today's mobile market. While not exactly a flop, the Nintendo 3DS Phone falls behind its competitors (even Windows Phones!) due to its low demand, lack of support by third parties, and AT&T exclusivity."

Flapperdoodle

"Yes, in a world where Nintendo seems to be behind in the mobile market, it only seems evident Nintendo would try to shove in an entry in this competition with something they know: their consoles. The 3DS phone is a brilliant example of something that, while it may sound ridiculous, it can become more and more possible as time goes on. The lack of a mass app library will definitely be annoying to consumers, as well as the AT&T exclusivity, but hey, it's Nintendo. They need some personal time with iOS and mobile tech."

2200

"Nintendo, let's hope it doesn't turn out like another famous Handheld Phone..."

CommanderZaktan

"The only thing that will suck for the 3DS phone is the battery life, which is about an hour. Drains much faster than any other mobile device."

bigjoe91

"What are you guys talking about? Oh that other thing that wasn't released in Canada? Well, I guess we won't know what it feels like to look like we are talking into a notepad. With that non-release and the exclusive mini Wii not having internet support, it kind of feels like they want Canadians to be isolated from the rest of the world. Maybe it's for the best..."

Kaibaman41

"The 3DS Phone...if it's called that I can see gamers and non-gamers alike say "A Phone made by Nintendo...that's crazy!" Well I'll say HOLD IT for a second and I'll explain why it's a good idea. Nintendo is a company designed to keep a whole family entertained, after all in Japan they made Pong consoles and also only in Japan they made even some "Love Hotels". Nintendo would need some help to make the idea work but please Nintendo whatever you do....don't go to AT&T!"

9. Tellale, the Studio Behind the Walking Dead Games, Make Game Based off Television Show, NCIS

CommanderZaktan

"After The Walking Dead was a huge success, Telltale decided to make another game, based of a TV show, NCIS. Having the original cast, the game will be like other games they did, except that you can interrogate suspects like in L.A. Noire and it'll have quick time events. And like the show, the game will include humor as well."

bigjoe91

"A special agent team of investigators' having adventures in video game form? Could work. I mean a lot of people enjoyed watching all of Metal Gear Solid 4's cutscenes."

JETZ.acx

"Telltale doing a better job than Ubisoft? Guaranteed. I have nothing else to say."

Kaibaman41

"If TellTale does an NCIS game it could be a combo of a LA NOIRE Clone and a Heavy Rain clone."

8. Fans Upset Over Microsoft's Next Xbox's "Innovative" Controller

CommanderZaktan

"At E3 2013, Microsoft will finally reveal their newest Xbox for the 8th generation console. The console looks nice, the hardware is much stronger, and could be the best console of this generation. Until they reveal their "innovative" controller. It's a clear, hard plastic, sensor controller that has circle that you can press for an action but no control sticks; just a big circle you have to touch to move but doesn't pressed down. Hardcore gamers are raged for the controller and they would rather the games be played with a 360 controller, which the Next Box doesn't have. So 360 owners will continue playing the console until Microsoft will shut down Xbox Live years later."

Flapperdoodle

"This is... uh... kinda a given. People love complaining all the time, and since the XBOX controller stinks already, it only seems like a perfect time to set an example for the gaming community... by continuously b*tching over controllers! And I don't blame 'em. The controller still sucks."

bigjoe91

"You gamers are so demanding. As long as it still plays Halo 5-6 and Madden, we'll be good, right Bro? Woooo! *Chest bumps and chugs keg*"

Kaibaman41

"If you thought the Kinect was bad (well it is) let's just say if Microsoft makes a controller where you yourself are the controller, it may be really bad. Imagine you control every character's movements as yourself, sure it sounds good on paper but with the Kinect already out, this will be bad. You try too move forward, you go back. You try to push a lever you jump in the game world. This idea could push Microsoft into the brink of collapse faster then you can say Sonic Boom."

2200

"A controller with only one button on it, eh? Well, it's definitely better than the Kinect only next-gen XBOX I was expecting. It least this one HAS a button..."

7. Minecraft for Windows 8, Cross-Platform with Xbox 360

JETZ.acx

"Windows 8 gets a much-needed jolt of gaming energy with the release of Minecraft for Windows 8, which is essentially the same game as the Xbox 360 version which had numerous improvements like further field drawing, anti-aislating (i.e. less jaggy graphics) and integration with Xbox Live. The downside? You must buy the game again, even if you bought it on the PC or Xbox 360. Fans are enraged by this whole mess and are now boycotting Minecraft altogether, as they see Mojang becoming the next Square Enix - releasing the same game on multiple platforms at the same, expensive price."

bigjoe91

"To think people would be upset with that re-release. It's not such a big deal especially if they can easily move it on Windows 8 Mobile. I guess Minecraft fans REALLY have nothing better to do than complain or play Minecraft."

Kaibaman41

"If fans would really complain about Minecraft on Windows 8 and make it cross-platform with the 360.......fans freaking out over this would be really sad, they would be giving the Insane Sonic fans a good name! You know the Sonic fans that even when Sega pleases them with good Sonic games, they shit on it.....yeah I made that comparison."

2200

"Being cross-platform with the XBOX 360 version is a great idea! But having to buy the game AGAIN... not a good idea, Mojang. Not a good idea."

6. Duke Nukem Eternal Edition's Developers Team Up with Blizzard

bigjoe91

"Duke Nukem Eternal edition is announced. Information was leaked after a third engine change. Not wanting to repeat the long delays of their latest game, 3D Realms seeks additional resources and experience to develop the game. After some negotiation, Blizzard answers the call.

The only thing I have to say is that you should all pre-order the game now. According to normal inflation, based on a 60$ price tag, it will probably be... 132 bucks when released in 40 years."

2200

"Definitely a day one purchase! Already Pre-ordered! :D It's definitely not going to disappoint when it releases in 2050."

JETZ.acx

"Hey, let's put it into perspective - we waited so long for Duke Nukem Forever and all we got was a mediocre game. With Blizzard on board to aid the development team behind Eternal Edition, we can at LEAST have a guarantee that the game WILL be good...however long it will take it to be released. We're patient. We'll buy it. Even if it costs $500 by the time it's released."

Flapperdoodle

"I definitely am not a big Duke Nukem fan, and I definitely won't be the first on line. But hey, Blizzard helping the franchise is something it desperately needs... NOW."

Alpha Unit

"I'm going to play Duke Nukem, and I'm going to see what everyone is crying about because everyone else's opinion usually doesn't matter to me."

CommanderZaktan

"After a disappointment on Duke Nukem Forever for fans, the developers team up with Blizzard to work on a new Duke Nukem game, that will take years to develop."

5. Durango Becomes Xbox Surface

JETZ.acx

"Rumors were flying like crazy about what the Durango (the next Xbox) will be in the end. Many said it was going to have a crazy 16-Core CPU, 8 GB of RAM, kick-ass GPU, AR glasses, Blu-Ray, Windows 8 integration, and a Wii-U like touchscreen. At E3 2013, Microsoft does the usual thing on their press-conference: throw a few bones of Gears of War, Call of Duty and Halo, switch to more Kinect BS, then all of a sudden - WHOA, they're going to show the new console!

...Which happens to be a glorified version of their already-released Surface. Microsoft explains how they were thinking about how to bring the console experience into the mobile space without taking anything away from the experience. Their solution was to make the console itself the controller - an all-in-one tablet that doubles as a console, powerful enough to handle Xbox 360 games (Derp) but also portable enough to take anywhere. It has Windows 8, Xbox Live integration and a cute little dock for console gamers to play with; you can play with the tablet itself (thanks to SmartGlass) or sync an Xbox 360 controller (sold separately). It has everything, except two big things: an actual hard drive (meaning it depends on SkyDrive and what little internal memory it might have) and a disc player, because let's face it - digital distribution is the way to go in the future.

Needless to say, people left the conference baffled at the sight that Microsoft gave a giant, middle finger to the gaming community as they shifted gears towards a more casual audience...AGAIN."

Flapperdoodle

"Oh god... Surface. Seriously, it is nothing than more than an iPad for Microsoft. I am not surprised at all by this news... why is this so high on our list again?"

JETZ.acx

"HOLD IT!

Surface is a Microsoft product."

Flapperdoodle

"Let's be honest, it's such a ploy, it could've been either."

JETZ.acx

"The thing is, this is the reason why I wrote this headline in the first place. Microsoft wants to push Windows 8 and their new tablet - BADLY - that a tie-in with the new Xbox wouldn't be too farfetched when you think about it. And if it DOES go that way, don't expect a jump of graphics or horsepower - it'll simply be an Xbox 360, only semi-portable, not unlike the Wii U. Only time will tell."

Flapperdoodle

"Sounds so pointless... yet so expected. I wish Microsoft luck... but I won't be following Durango much anyways."

bigjoe91

"Well we all knew that was coming as soon as the rumors started to Surface. It was either that or they'd install an Xbox in a Dodge car."

4. Retro Studios Reveals Original IP

JETZ.acx

"Retro Studios has been hidden for a while keeping the fact that they are indeed working on something that gamers have been clamoring for years since they first broke in the video game industry with the critically-acclaimed Metroid Prime series. On E3 2013, they reveal their newest game isn't a new Star Fox or F-Zero game, as many predicted; instead, it's a new IP.

What is this new IP? Hard to say. Retro Studios has already made it clear that they can tackle any medium, genre or setting and make it shine thanks to their pedigree on two widely different games - the Prime series and the awesomerrific Donkey Kong Country Returns - so at this point, it's hard to say what this original IP will be set in, or what genre they will tackle. Whichever is the case, Retro Studios' newest AAA title isn't a sequel or a re-imagining of an existing franchise, but instead a new game from the ground up. Because quite honestly, this is exactly what the gamers asked from the beginning: what can Retro Studios do on their own?"

Flapperdoodle

"YES! I WANT THIS ONE SO BAD! THIS HAS TO BE TRUE! PLEASE LET THIS BE TRUE!

But in all seriousness, this is probably the greatest move they can make right now. We've seen their talents, and these guys can set the bar high, for sure. So, what better way to help Nintendo out by developing a strong new concept for a franchise builder? Seriously, anything these guys can come up with will instantly turn pure gold."

CommanderZaktan

"At E3 2013, Nintendo will reveal their newest IP from Retro Studios. This game will be the thing Nintendo needs to increase Wii U sales, making the game the hottest selling game and the nominee of the Game of the Year of 2013"

bigjoe91

"People are funny. I'm just gonna say this to set your expectations a little lower: How many famous writers do you know that started with really good fan fictions?"

JETZ.acx

"I think two. Well, I know one very clearly, and the source of inspiration for her "success" wasn't exactly a good one. The other one...is kinda fuzzy for me at the moment.

WAIT, what does THIS have to do with #4?"

bigjoe91

"Retro Studios fan fictioned their way to the top of the industry by remaking old Nintendo franchises. Don't look at me like that! You all knew I was gonna be the bitch of this news team."

2200

"Can't wait to see what kind of original game Retro is capable of creating. I'm pretty sure it will blow our minds.

Also, fan fiction... I think I know what bigjoe is talking about."

Alpha Unit

"I got started with fanfiction"

3. Individual Kills a Person by Forcing them to Cross a Highway, Dressed in a Frog Suit

bigjoe91

"Desperate to prove the bad influence of video games on violence, an individual plots to kill people in the exact scenarios shown in video games. After a victim was found dressed in a frog suit forced to cross a highway, the media still fails to see how the killer is just a crazy lunatic.

When will we think of the children? These people learn murder through video games! Just like that guy that draws his victims with a promise of cakes!"

Flapperdoodle

"Hilarious. Possible. Sad. Three words that perfectly describe this spot. I love it. 'Nuff said."

JETZ.acx

"This SHOULD happen on Florida. Wait. On a state like that, I wouldn't be surprised if they already had a headline like that in the past. But seriously, the absurdity of this headline is what sells it in the end. We're all waiting for it to happen."

2200

"Every news channel that covers this story will once again, blame video games for the tragedy. The population is gullible; won't even think twice..."

2. IGN is Owned by Oprah and is Now Aimed at Women

bigjoe91

"IGN finds an owner in the end: Oprah who wants to expand the Oprah media network. IGN then becomes the biggest gaming website aimed at women. Unfortunately, it focuses on dancing, casual, dress-up games and all other stereotypical games aimed at girls. Woman gaming society sends shockwaves through simultaneous facepalms.

Will IGN finally become the source for the Imagine series of games?"

Flapperdoodle

"The comedy here is evident. Is this possible? Yeah, no. But, would this be a good prank? Absolutely. I can just see it now, IGN's logo looking like the OWN Channel's logo. With the IGN guys in suits all the time running talk shows. Hell, they are already starting that off. So... meh. I guess this would be fun."

JETZ.acx

"At least we can agree on one thing, though: we're switching the targeted audience from stupid 13-year old teens with a tendency to swear for no reason...to this

Give me overly-exited, slightly creepy people over angry, swear-spewing idiots any day.

Wait...

Maybe not. D:"

CommanderZaktan

"When Oprah brought IGN, people who liked the site were pissed. Not only did Oprah want the site to expand her image, but also to remove the focus on video games. When asked about IGN, Oprah replied that they themselves were in almost to bankruptcy, so they asked her to be part of Oprah's media."

Kaibaman41

"If IGN is bought by Oprah man oh man will hilarity ensue, IGN is all ready the evil of the Internet but if Oprah buys them out and makes it's audience aimed at the female population I can imagine all the jokes that can happen if that day comes."

Alpha Unit

"She probably wouldn't aim them at women, but children and the site wouldn't condone video game violence by writing numerous articles about how bad it is. There wouldn't be news, but propaganda."

Kaibaman41

"Very well true that possibility is Alpha Unit"

Alpha Unit

"The possibility is Alpha Unit. From now on, that shall be a new line when I solve a problem or attempt to solve one."

1. Disney Buys Nintendo

2200

"Is your body ready for this story?"

"At an attempt to expand their business empire, Disney began making smart investments in "smaller" companies/corporations from different parts of media and entertainment. First was purchasing Marvel and how could we forget the storm that was Disney buying Lucasfilms and the Star Wars franchise for approximately 4 billion US dollars. Disney had successfully entered the Comic Book Industry, thanks to Marvel. And Star Wars, which is a whole different category in itself. What's next? The Video Game Industry. After months of super secret negotiations between Walt Disney and Nintendo, it was announced in mid-2013 that Nintendo has become apart of the Disney empire. It shocked the world, the impact can still be heard. The world's most famous and iconic characters and video game's most famous characters are now under one house. Microsoft and Sony start dwindling away in the competition. The biggest blow was to Sony fans, when it was announced that Kingdom Hearts 3 would be on the Wii U exclusively. What happened next, no one could have predicted...

Only a few months after acquiring Nintendo, Reggie rose to power in Disney. No one could go against the authority of the Regginator. He became the 100% sole owner of Walt Disney; renaming the whole corporation, Nintendo. They have token over the world. Nintendo fans around the world rejoice with celebrations and amazing quality games. While everyone else should hide for their lives and live a few hours of freedom before Nintendo eventually finds you and conforms you... One of us... One of us!

This WILL happen. 2013."

CommanderZaktan

"In 2013, Disney does the unthinkable. They buy Nintendo, and with Disney on their side, Nintendo will make new IPs and good Disney games. People are beginning to think that Disney are trying to buy everything and will become the leader of the entertainment market."

Flapperdoodle

"A little, but honestly, this isn't SO far off. I mean, with the recent Marvel and Disney debacle, it wouldn't seem that odd for Nintendo to be bought out by a company they work with very closely. Disney is a great source of revenue, and Nintendo having them on their side could allow for plenty of things. Good movies on Nintendo franchises, and possible Mickey and Mario crossover, maybe a TRIPLE CROSSOVER FIGHTING GAME with Nintendo, Disney, and Marvel. Don't lie to me and tell me that doesn't sound awesome.

Plus, Mario could be in Wreck-it-Ralph 2. Yup, I like me some of dat."

Alpha Unit

"The possibility of Disney purchasing Nintendo is Alpha Unit"

bigjoe91

"Hey! I heard of this news on the Oprah Gaming Network! Well 2200 did give the best explanation possible. Is your body Reggie? (for the microchip implant that will allow them to control us all)"

______________________________________________

That concludes our g1 Community's Top 10 Headlines of 2013!!

CommanderZaktan

"I think some of those headlines might be come true, I mean I really hope it's a new IP. I think 2013 will be a good year, and we're still alive. As for me, I'm planning an upcoming project, but it'll be on hold since I'll be in college this Spring. Hope to see you guys next time."

JETZ.acx

"While some of these headlines are just for pure laughs, a lot of them are based on common sense and wishful thinking for the near future. With the next generation of console gaming soon to be upon us, let's hope 2013 will be all about huge, pleasant surprises and less cringe-worthy disappointments. Oh, and less bitching and complaining. We can have less of that any day.

As for me, personally I'm keeping it safe while at the same time looking for new ways to surprise people here on ScrewAttack. Sadly I'm no longer working on the g1 Digital Forecast this year, but I still have plans for livestreaming and possibly a few personal videos...if all goes well. Will I go to SGC? Only the future will tell. JETZ.acx out."

Flapperdoodle

"2013 is gonna be an interesting year for gaming, as we've already had some events to foreshadow this. Let's hope we're right... because sadly, we just might be. See you all on the flip side!"

bigjoe91

"So this has been fun. I hope we found enough news to create some discussion. I'm hopeful for 2013. Whatever happens, I'll go with it. For now all I can ask is that you join me for another year. I do have a couple of top 10's on the way and I will review every game I finish this year. You can also accompany me in the wonderful world of my gaming ABCs or livestreams and still see me collaborating left and right!

Have a good one g1s!"

Kaibaman41

"With the topics and headlines we all discussed here, I can see a good chunk of them being true. The reason why I think the topics we discussed could be real is let's look back on the rumor mill of 2012. A lot of the rumors last year became true which is an amazing feat, let's see where 2013 goes.

Well g1s it's been real fun working on this list in this collaboration, until we see each other again stay golden g1s. See ya next time g1s, Kaibaman41 out!"

Alpha Unit

"2013 is turning out to be a crappy year after all. Just as planned."

First of all, let me thank every member of the news team: JETZ.acx, bigjoe91, Flapperdoodle, Alpha Unit, Kaibaman41 and CommanderZaktan.

And thanks to the g1s who signed up as backups: BenNiGeLing, LineBeckIV, Mr. West, A Zero to Hero, usedgamer and CrazyDuck. Even though your services were never needed in the end, still appreciate the support!

Also, I would like to thank g1 Wulfon, of the Sig Maker Community, for creating the awesome blog header and thumbnail!

Well, hope you guys enjoyed this list. Remember to leave your headline predictions in the comments.

REMINDER: The next g1 Community List is still going on! g1s, go and support it!

Until next time g1s, 2200 ou- One of us... One of us!

Great ideas about the future. I do hope for sure that Retro Studios will reveal a new IP. If so, then that game will probably rake in the cash (or at least have a lot of hype for it). It was funny reading these and bigjoe's comments are always hilarious.

If Disney buys Nintendo then we could be Nintendo characters in the new Infinity game and when Duke Nukem Eternal is announced, it's going to be delayed numerous times then the game releases after 10-20 years.
