Throughout any given year, thousands of people within the gaming community take part in several special events to raise money for Child’s Play, a wonderful charity that gives games, toys, and other pieces of entertainment to children staying various hospitals, clinics, and domestic abuse shelters across the world.
Whether it was placing bids in auctions, or buying Humble Bundles, or even watching or taking part in livestreams (Desert Bus, Mario Marathon, Zeldathon, Pat the NES Punk’s NES Marathon), the gaming community would reach down deep and give what they to could.
As it turns out, gamers have managed to dig deeper than ever before, as the community through this collective effort had raised an astounding $5,085,761 for Child’s Play in 2012!
Here’s a snippet of what Child’s Play project manager Jamie Dillion had to say about the outpouring of generosity the charity received this past year:
“Child’s Play is fortunate to have this amazing community of generous, engaged individuals who are deeply passionate for the cause. It quite literally would be nothing without your amazing support. From individual donations and wishlist purchases to filling out donation-matching paperwork to even watching and cheering on a marathon, every effort makes a difference.”
“Every dollar is earned through a monumental amount of work organizing the technology, auctions, giveaways and call-ins. Their hard work illustrates how great our community is - passionate, generous individuals working with gamers to accomplish an incredible goal.”
“We are overwhelmed, honored, grateful, and incredibly proud to be a part of such an amazing community of generous gamers. Thank you for a record-breaking 2012!”
I know I’ve said this before but I think it’s worthy of repetition; sure there can be a few silly arguments or drama within the gaming community (well any community really) sometimes but when gamers ban together for a common good, great and wonderful things truly are possible.
So congratulations Child’s Play. And here’s to 2013. May it bring even more joy and good will to all those who need it most.

I was too late for any indie bundles, but I watched the Megamarathon for a LONG time yesterday. I had it on while playing ACIII (after an hour of watching) and the viewers suddenly jumped from ~175 to 4 digits. So children.
