Google wants to be your next ISP

7/27/12 8:00pm

I for one welcome our new Google overlords.

Google is starting an Internet service that uses Fiber Optic cables that allows your bandwidth to go up to 1 Gigabit per second/125 Megabytes which is stupidly fast. With this you can download games like RAGE in a matter of minutes and you can stream up to 8 streams without any kind of slowdown.

Google is putting their new ISP in Kansas City first. You could get Google Fiber in your town but you need enough people in your area before Google can set it up in your area. The video below elaborates more on the subject.

Well g1s? What do you think of Google Fiber? Are jealous of Kansas City right now? What would you download first once you get Google Fiber?

I sincerely hope there are less-extravagant packages because there is nowhere near enough demand for 1024/125 speeds for this to work.

And Google takes another step in monopolizing information and how we get it. But I'm cool with it, I love Google since they are pretty pro-open source.

Google is only the fastest ISP in America and America only. There's a Nippon company that's state owned if I remember right that has literally 1.20 Tbps. Yes Terabits per second. It is split however into multiple channels in which each channel is a bunch of Gbps that I forgot the number. Look up Fiber Optics if you're interested :P however that company is meant for itself not for providing internet to residents or commerce.

Hopefully this will get Verizon to bet a little more competitive with their FIOS pricing as they won't be the only game in town for much longer.

"The 'Fiberhoods' with the most preregistrations get Fiber first. So make sure you talk to your neighbors and get them to preregister too." Well played, Google. Well played.

Yay, more ways for google to track everything I do, and now faster. Now they can save all your searches and what you do online so they can get it to law enforcement faster then any other ISP. I stay away from anything with Google in the name.

Amen! If you guys don't see where this is going you totally deserve it, no offense. Europe already showed the finger to those shady corporations and lobbyist so I'm pretty sure they'll do the same if the time comes.

1Gbps can really blind people, as if you ever gonna download at that speed, not anytime soon... You'll always be dependent from the source to get your speed. For example, I have 100Mbps but I can't download anything from Steam at that speed. I average about 10Mbps from Steam and the list goes on...

Not everything is a conspiracy, dude. Sometimes companies just need to advance and Google is certainly trying to push the envelope to what it should already have been pushed at. Fiber optics are really not new tech and should have been implemented ages ago.

Also, of course you cant download things from steam at 100mbps yet because the Steam network doesnt provide those speeds to individual users since its not p2p. However, if this google fiber advance continues, eventually the infrastructure will change and it'll be likely that Steam downloads will kick up to 500mbps after mass adoption of google fiber.

What about the part where they'll provide free internet service at the competitor's speed? Would you welcome Google then? It isn't listed in the article, but I got this info from my companies tech service department who is going to implement Google's service on their KC location.
