Grasshopper Manufacture has been acquired by MMO publisher GungHo Online

1/30/13 3:02pm

For reasons that I fail to understand, Grasshopper Manufacture has decided to join with Japanese publisher GungHo Online. The studio run by Suda51 has developed fan favorites like No More Heroes or Lollipop Chainsaw and they’ve defined themselves through their unique franchises. After joining an MMO publisher, who knows what direction their new parent company may have in store for them.

GungHo Online has mostly published PC games built in the MMORPG space. Their most popular is the 10 year old Ragnarok Online, but more recently they been releasing console games like Dokuro and Ragnarok Odyssey. This acquisition might be a way for them to buy into the market, and with Killer is Dead already in development; they have a new IP already on the way. Is this a good thing or bad thing for gaming g1s?

FUCK! I was hoping Nintendo was the one who bought them. Goddamnit, there go my dreams of ever seeing No More Heroes 3.

Um. I don't like where this is going. Hope Suda51 doesn't change too much.

Well that was unexpected... I would also like to know why exactly they joined GunHo Online, but as long as this doesn't interfere with SUDA51's creative mind, I'm okay with it... for now.

Honestly this is so out of left field and I know so little about the publisher that I can't say either way.
