GRIN may have been rebooting two classic franchises

2/21/12 9:00pm

When GRIN shuttered its doors back in 2009, it felt like they were screwed over a little by its publishers. Sure, Bionic Commando ended up being a turd and Wanted: Weapons of Fate was lame, but these guys were ambitious. They seemed to have great ideas and were even supposedly working on a new Final Fantasy codenamed "Fortress". Ideas sometimes aren’t enough though, ultimately GRIN went bankrupt. Maybe they were o ambitious...

Now it appears they might have had plans to reboot some classic franchises we know and love, like Strider and Streets of Rage. Spanish site Anait Games is reporting that someone received some assets from GRIN Barcelona detailing all three of these cancelled titles. Once GRIN new Final Fantasy was off the table, they went to Ubisoft about Strider and Capcom about Streets of Rage, but no one wanted to take the chance I guess. Too bad really, these are all things that my money is interested in. Here is a sneak peak at what Strider could have been.

The only hope for the Final Fantasy franchise is gone and a Strider and Streets of Rage reboot is possibly gone as well? Major bummer.

Well in the original Spanish article it says that after the release of Bionic Commando, Capcom canned the Strider remake and Grin went to Ubisoft in order to refund the game "previously known as Strider". Also they said to be working with Sega in a Streets of Rage remake.

How could they go to Ubisoft about Strider when Capcom owns Strider? Same thing with Streets of Rage which is owned by Sega.

The question now is would the game have overcome the "moneymaker" genre and make a loyal next gen Strider game or would it just have been a generic hack and slash with cheap stealth?
