Help Sony design the next DualShock 3 Controller!

8/7/12 1:00pm

Editor's Note: You can also see all the current submissions here!

The g1s with a knack for design should look into this one.

Starting today and ending August 15th, Sony wants some help designing the next version of the DualShock 3! Now, this isn't like the design of the controller itself, this is just for the newest color of the controller.

Now, it doesn't have to be just one flat color. It can have characters, patterns, etc.

Here's an example:

I think I'd like that PS4 controller in the header.

You really can't make a controller better than the 360 controller, let's be honest.

Keyboard and Mouse, capasitive touchscreens, Xbox 360 controller, Wii controller, Kinect. They all have nothing on the CD-i wireless spoon controller. Trolololololol.

You know I'm kidding right?

Hell no man, PS2 and SNES are so much better. However, the 360 controller is pretty good.

SNES is perfect for retro games, but the PS2 controller is outdated. There's not even any point differentiating it from the PS3 controller, it's exactly the same, but with motion control and no wires. It's not ergonomic and the left stick is in the wrong place. You play any game where you're using both sticks with a PS2/3 controller, you'll be bumping thumbs constantly. With the exception of the D-pad and the non-flat buttons, the 360 controller is perfect.

It's all based on opinion anyway, but I play both 360 and PS3 extensively and ultimately I prefer the PS3 controller.

I have run into the problem you refer to, "bumping thumbs," but it doesn't happen constantly, only ever so often. The triggers are too heavy and not very useful, the buttons occasionally get sticky if my hands sweat, and using L1 and R1 to shoot when playing FPS games can leave some people unhappy (I prefer it, honestly, but I can see why some people would rather pull a trigger).

The 360 controller is heavy, the triggers often squeak, the buttons can get sticky, the thumbsticks are a little loose and don't feel as accurate as the PS3's, and the Dpad is pretty horrendous for anything other than inventory management.

Overall, I like the way the 360 controller feels in my hands, but I like the weight of the PS3 controller more. It's light and easy to use over long play periods. My hands get cramped if I play too long with the 360 controller. I've also noticed that I play and shoot much more accurately with the PS3 thumbsticks than the 360's.

It all comes down to personal preference, but, really, they're both great controllers and the fact that we can legitimately argue over which is better proves that they're both excellent.

That's obviously a matter of opinion. Trust me if you played with a ps3 controller for a week you'd be like, "meh this isn't so bad." Same with a ps3 player to an Xbox controller.
