Love it. I'm playing on 360. Wonder if this will pop up there too.
Great use of the Lavender Town theme.
ITT: Guy retells herobrine myth and says it's not real with an explanation we saw coming.
I'm sure this is cool for those not in the circle of people who play minecraft, but to the rest of us (including Creepy pasta regulars) this is a disappointing episode.
All we need now is a Ben Theory.
I remember PeanutButter talked about Herobrine in one of his videos and made some footage of himself playing minecraft in which Herobrine supposedly appears, i'm guessing it's in an attempt to scare the viewer, but he messes up and makes it look incredibly fake.
oh man i love PBGs vid of Herobrine. definiately check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ck4JZRdMm_k
Wow, just hearing that story about herobrine (and if you assume it's real) freaks me the hell out. Was actually sort of sad it wasn't real...
as soon as he mentioned Herobrine, Firefox suddenly crashed! O_O
the problem with herobrine, and really most creepypasta and internet story is the lack of threat, while yes herobrine story is probly one of the strongest creepypasta's it still has a lot of the failings, what it does right is create a mystery and a (somewhat small) sence of dread, that being what is this weird aparition in the game and how it apparently is linked to the forums, but what it does wrong is ansewring that mystery and not following up on the dread, see people the reason why most creepypasta's related to games don't work is because they never in any way follow up on their horror 'elements' usualy most 'mystery' in them can be ansewrd by 'elaborate hax' i get the fact that it's hard to write in a death or any other number of things that could personaly happen to the protaganist when the story is written to be believed, but it can be done, one great example is the 'ben drowned' creepypasta, at least 'season 1' of it, wich utilises bother video and text dumps to explain whats happening, it sets up a mystery (who is ben) attempts to solve it (ben is a kid who owned the cart) but ultimately the mystery is unsolved (ben isn't the thing causing the game to do weird stuff) to cherry top that cake there are also CONSIQUENCE to what is being told to us, the thing in the cart is in the aurthours computer, it's messing with him, toying with him and changing what he says and in the end it's insinuated that if you downloaded a text document of one of the updates 'ben' is now in your computer too, ready to strike when it feels the need another great example of fiction presented as fact is marble hornets, wich removes the 'authour' of the videos from the equation for about 20 parts by having everything happen to a third party with him being a observer, of tapes in this sence, the anti is upped though when things start happening to the aurthour and there are again, consequences
to sum up the reason herobrine doesn't work as a scary concept to me is that A: he shows little power outside of the game and forums that i might find 'intimidating' about him and B: any mystery is stripped away from him because he's specificly pointed out as being notchs brother, he's a spooky ghost, in the shell if you would
i'm not saying that herobrine implemented in game wouldn't be scary, it probly would be, but horror in writing works diffrently then in video games, games are visual and involve our input, we're already invested, a piece of writing though has to work for that investment, you can't just say 'and then a skeleton popped out' and expect some sort of jumping scare, you have to explain a situation in detail, offer sugestions but never ansewrs, tell us what the stakes are and how the 'hero' is in risk, play on primal fear and common uncomfortable situation, and most importantly, if you are telling a story from your own perspective and you want it to be believeable, never link it to somebody who can outright say 'that's not true' cause then your story isn't scary on any level.
Great episode! I would sure be creeped out to see Herobrine lurking in the fog.
Love the use of the Professor Layton theme. Oh, and good episode, I always love hearing about these gaming urban legends.
Ahem...Fake and gay.
Good episode dude :)
