Hotline Miami 2 may be removing sexual assault scene due to negative feedback
Controversy is flying high around Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number and the game hasn't even dropped yet. The reason is a scene in the demo where is appears that one of the characters is about to rape a woman, but is then stopped has been receiving quite negative feedback.
After so many outraged reactions, developer Dennaton games has since pulled the scene from the demo, stating that
For everyone "outraged" by the screen. Look, we in no way condone rape. But, if we're now at the point where people loose it when a game just insinuates something terrible happening to fictional pixilated characters, where is creative freedom heading?
A joke is one thing, but telling a story that exposes the darker side of humanity is something different. At least Dennaton Games is going to explore the issue further and judge reactions from testers who play the game in its entirety before removing the scene from the game completely.
Plus killing another human being is justifiable if it is done for a good reason, such as in self-defense or protecting a loved one. You don't rape a criminal for trying to rob you or hurt your wife, that would just be disproportionate retribution.
At the same time though, killing should only be done as a last resort. Plus murder is still worse than rape in that there is no chance for recovery for the victim. Despite what many people say, If someone is raped they can recover from that trauma. If someone is killed, there is no hope to heal them.
Anti-nudity makes more sense I think, the only time I think nudity is ok to show is if it is a kid that is naked.
I'm afraid humanity is just that screwed up
It seems everybody is getting two things mixed up:
Creative Freedom vs. Fan Reaction. No one is stopping them from making the game. If they want to make a 'dark' game with 'dark' themes they are allowed. Its been done, and they won't be stopped. I think the Game Overthinker did a video on this recently. Its not that they are being forced to remove it like the article tries to imply. But just like artsy movies with controversial stuff, it may hurt the sales.
I don't think your 'logic' actually works...
Murder is more acceptable because well, you get murdered and that's the end of it(even if it is in a gory, grotesque, and UNGODLY fashion). And since death is such an undeniable part of life people have come to accept it through things like religion saying upon death people reach a better place. But with rape they(often times) have to live with it, being haunted by the memories, especially if they were impregnated... That still doesn't make this outrage/pseudo censorship any less ridiculous(especially since the crime didn't even come into fruition), but I figured you figured u genuinely wanted an answer so here ya go! Also the anti nudity in games thing still doesn't make a lick of sense to me >:/..
I'm just expressing my disgust if they are the sort of people who take rape lightly, which it seems a lot of people do. Its sort of a manifestation of anger on the general 'jokey-ness' that many people hold towards rape and sexual assault.
I suppose, but 1. Its more like applying their own touch to them, and its a little more cartoony and 2. You don't have to buy my comment, I'm not a business.
It's not the idea that the stoppage is bad to them, but the context and idea of rape in general is in bad taste to them. While I don't condone real-life rape, rape in storytelling to explore the dark reality we live in can be both educational to those who may be unaware or an idea of entertainment (only in a fictional sense obviously). A great example of this is "Extremities."
With that logic, I guess all 'violent' games condone 'murder'.
Rape is a thing in today's society, and falls under criminal law...in my opinion, it fits perfectly for a game such as 'Hotline Miami'. When did murder become so acceptable over sexual nudity and rape.....it's beyond me!
stabbing 10 people in the throat with a knife while under the effects of lsd... ok
kicking someone's brains out... ok
only in videogames
If I read right, people were upset that someone was going to rape someone and they don't care that he was stopped. Is that right? Stopping rape is bad?
It says the rape doesn't happen. It is stopped. Isn't it a good thing if someone stops a rape?
Wait then! The hell was up with the chick from the first game then? No one complained about that but, everyone goes nuts for this. Ok...
How exactly is rape worse than mass murder? Don't get me wrong, it is the worst thing you can do to someone (without getting too creative), but fiction is fiction, so everything is allowed. I understand that it might make people uncomfortable, but that's the point of a dark setting.
Sorry kiddos; rape is a thing. Pretending it isnt doesnt make it go away. And acting like its "out of place" in a game where you smash heads in with planks and shoot dozens of cops in the face.. then im not sure what world you live in.
You understand how hypocritical your comment was, right?
You're wishing genital mutilation upon a group of people because they created a piece of digital content you don't approve of, and they are the unreasonable ones.
I honestly feel like if it WAS a 'rape joke' I hope they get their penises maimed in a violent accident that is hilarious for an outside observer.
They have all the creative freedom in the world, but just like comedians, if people find your product distasteful and offensive don't expect to make a ton of cash.
