It's Game Over for G4 next year...
EDIT: This only applies to the American version of G4. Canadian viewers: Your channel should be safe. For now. Especially you, g1 Dark Magician.
Play this video while reading the article cause it's a PERFECT way to set the tone:
Well, I guess the writing was on the wall. G4, the network that kept us plugged in for 10 long years, just when it found its footing with Attack of the Show!, Ninja Warrior, and X-Play, is gonna get killed off next year.
NBC Universal, the channel's parent company said that it's looking to change to "a more sophisticated look while remaining true to its tech and vid game roots" by turning into a TV version of GQ and eschewing its nerd focus in favor of something more "modern male".
And there you have it, g1s. The channel that kept us plugged in for 10 long-ass years, had some ups and downs (Game On, anyone?), acquired a competing tech network, exiled Leo Laporte to Canada and made him later start his own tech website. They made Olivia Munn jump in a giant chocolate pie, eat a hot dog and confront a fear of balloons; but now they're turning thru GQ lane down right of Modern Male Blvd and frankly, I'm gonna miss it.
How 'bout you? What were your favorite memories of G4 and/or TechTV? Are you said to see this legendary nerd channel go? And are you pissed that they might go gay, somewhere along the line, a la Bravo? Jot 'em down below!
I always liked AotS, but I loved it when it was Candace and Adam. XPlay was always fun. Ninja Warrior would glue me in the chair for as long as they aired. They had a few original history based programs that started to fill a void of a complete lack of quality telling of the crazy ass history that video games have. I enjoyed it and hope some quality game programming makes its way onto the new channel. Yeah, Cops and Cheaters were lame, but thats nothing to hate the channel for. I always hoped they would have dedicated a slab of time to all the amazing internet talent out here. Maybe something with that.
Also, seriously? Spam bots are back?
Oh no, where am I going to watch Cops and Cheaters! now!? But seriously, I havent avidly watched G4 since they removed TechTv from the channel's name. It had some good stuff for a bit, but seriously, its like a second Spike TV now, but with even less variety. Glad to hear that TechTV might get a revival, but I really doubt any of the old stars are coming back. Heres hoping Sess and the others get some of their own stuff going soon!

Great, first Nintendo Power is down, now G4 is. Who's next? gameinformer? Oh god, it's all crashing down the video game industry is going to die! AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
I am gonna miss ninja warrior
X-Play had its faults, but I was talking about its earlier carnation.
Also, Adam was and is more prominent and talented than any of the would-be could-be gaming journalists who ever worked for them.
No, the cancer that killed them off was clearly COPS reruns and 18-30 random manly shows.
It sucked when they got rid of "Anime Unleashed"... And what will happen to "Ninja Warrior"?
"eschewing its nerd focus in favor of something more "modern male"." Sounds like dumbing it down so the apes can understand it to me.
uh.. no thy're the cancer that killed the channel
No it died in 2004 when Xplay raped it in the ass hard.....so it's no real surprise to me that they haven't thought of kicking the bucket years ago.. it was just completely down hill from there..I'd say my so longs but not for now but in 2004. I knew the channel was doomed when Starcade was yanked from it's line-up from day 1 of the merger and soon like rotten teeth off goes all the originals from g4... Soooo... that's it. Let's see what takes over prolly a channel that will just marathon show to no end...
For the record, for a few years X-Play was one of my favorite shows on television. The channel has been dead to me for years now, but I can't say I don't have fond memories of it.
I only hate the, or, don't like them either way, because of their horrible mean community. They don't even like each other. I love you g1's.
Oh, also I live in Canada, so I guess I'll still see them around for a while lol.
I'll miss them enough, but I won't be balling my eyes out. I haven't watched them regularly since before I went to college, but every now and then I'd turn the channel on.
I hope the talented members of their crew find work quickly after the channel is shut down!
Extended Play and Adam Sessler.
All the more reason to invite him at SGC next year. Wink. WINK!!!
Kevin Pereira was the only reason to watch that crap channel anyways.
So, more about technology and less re-runs of cops.
Realistically speaking, they've stayed around this long because NBC let them so they can dump all of their syndicated programming on the channel. If G4 said no to that, they would've been canned a long time ago.
G4tv was good for awhile, I liked some of the adult cartoons they tried like spaceballs and code monkies. I never cared for attack of the show and stopped watching xplay after they stopped just doing reviews. I did visit g4tv.com/xplay reguraly for sessler's soap box and video game reviews but stopped after Adam left since I felt Morgan Webb had the personality of a bag of potato chips. So I am not shocked its leaving, I am not glad but can't say that I am sad at this point to see them go.
Quite sad indeed especially being that NBC pretty much controls the channel. It was good times. My first exposure to G4 in four words: Ninja...Phone...Sex...Line. Laughed my ass off. Great shows I remember over the years include Ninja Warrior, Code Monkeys, Human Wrecking Balls, and Proving Ground. It's been a wild ride. Requiescat in Pace G4.
