The Kooplings are back [again] in New Super Mario Bros. 2
We have yet another piece of news concerning the upcoming 3DS release of New Super Mario Bros. 2. Yesterday we brought news of local co-op, today we bring you confirmation that Bowser’s delightful (Hell-spawn) offspring The Kooplings will be brought back to interfere with Mario and Luigi’s gold rush.
The confirmation comes from the chaps over at IGN who discovered this lovely image in their Nintendo press kit:

We like Roy! We like Roy!
No details about The Kooplings involvement in the game’s plot (which I’m sure will involve the kidnapping of Princess Peach, or maybe for an added twist Princess Daisy) but I’d wager a guess that they’ll each serve as the main boss of a particular.
No matter how large or small their involvement ultimately becomes, it’s always awesome to see these troublesome magic-wielders and I look forward to stomping them down all over again.

I would love to see a Mario Bros. game where Bowser forms an alliance with Wario and Waluigi. If you play as Mario, you have to save Peach. If you play as Luigi, you save Daisy.

Been there, done that. At least I get to pound these Koopalings again for little reason. >: )

Roy is sporting that manly pink.

It's been close to 20 something years for these characters. I don't give a crap that Nintendo is re-using them, or old school power ups in new games. My main concern is just understanding why gold is such an important part of this game.... I don't want infinite 1-ups so I really hope there's more to the gold gimmick.
Also.. THIS WILL BE THE FIRST 3DS GAME OFFERED AS A DOWNLOAD OR A RETAIL AT THE SAME TIME! YES! I will TOTALLY buy this game on the eShop!

Maybe you have to use the gold to unlock stuff in game, that would be cool.

It makes the most sense. I mean, with so many coins, you're gonna earn so many 1-ups and extra lives, there HAS to be a way to temper that and keep it from maxing out. Otherwise, where's the challenge?

It's to make it accessible to younger players. Making it easy to get 1-Ups, like in Kirby's Return to Dreamland, is going to draw in younger players who get turned off by harder games. That's my theory, anyway.

Not a very good one. I grew up as a kid with the original Mario games and I still played and beat them without accumilating insane amounts of extra lives. Also, even without that, the past 2-D mario games for the Wii and DS have been VERY easy to get lives in anyway. Without even trying I earned up to the max within a matter of a few levels. I dunno... I just hope there's another reason for the plethora of coins...

I kinda wish Mario games didn't have to be so dependent on nostalgia, how about instead of reintroducing and refrencing things from the NES games why don't they make a throw back to Super Mario 64 instead of having yet another Super Mario Bros. Refrence.

Wouldn't making a throwback to Super Mario 64 depend on some amount of nostalgia?
