Lauren Faust joins Mane6 team, Fighting is Magic is reborn

3/2/13 5:25pm
tl;dr

While Mane6 can no longer use My Little Pony characters to beat the cuteness out of each other, they are recreating Fighting is Magic with all new characters... with the help of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic's creator, Lauren Faust.

Editor’s Note: I fully agree with Chad on this one. Now that the game’s going to have original characters created by Faust herself, Mane6 should certainly latch onto this golden opportunity they’ve been given and turn the game into a commercial product and release it on as many platforms as they can.

We’ve seen their engine in action and it’s really solid. They truly have a legitimate chance to make a name for themselves in the industry (or at the very least within the fighting game community) and they should totally go for it!

As many of you know, Mane6, the developers who wre working on a My Little Pony inspired fighting game, MLP: Fighting is Magic, recently received a cease and desist order from Hasbro to put a permanent stop to the game’s development.

However, the team would later receive a surprising message (via Twitter) from MLP: Friendship is Magic creator Lauren Faust, which provided some hope for the project to be salvaged:

"Want some original characters to make a new game with? Not MLP OCs, something totally new."

Lauren Faust is the Creator of Friendship is Magic, and has also worked on cartoons such as The Powerpuff Girls.

Well, Mane6 updated their followers on the situation earlier today and they had some good news and bad news to share with us. The bad news is they can no longer use MLP related characters beating the stuffing out of each other, however, the good news is Lauren Faust is now working on the game!

"Hey folks! I’m so super psyched to be a part of this! I hope I can do my little part to help Mane6 finish up this game in a way that stays true to the spirit of the original—but in a way that can freely be shared! I hope you like what we come up with." -Lauren Faust

Moreover, they are keeping the moveset and mechanics of the game, with new characters and a different setting.

"It means that with Lauren’s help, we are going to finish this game, but it will no longer be based on the MLP franchise. It will be all new characters in a new setting, while keeping the moves, mechanics, and style of the game we wanted to make from the start." -Mane6

What do you think of this, g1s? Do you think the game will be just as good without the cute ponies?

Not really into the MLP scene, but having met Mrs. Faust in person, this does not surprise me. She is an awesome person who deeply cares for her fanbase. If more creators where like her no telling what we could have.

Original characters? Plus Lauren Faust? Hmm.....well she WAS trying to pitch that Galaxy Girls idea as a cartoon. Yeah I can see that IP being the replacement for the FiM franchise.

Never watched the show, but that's awesome for them. I will say, I always thought "Fighting is Magic" was the best title for a game ever, so I'm sad to see that go. Oh well, I guess we can't have everything.
