Luminous Engine scalable to any platform
If you're anything like me, you were blown away by Agni's Philosophy, the Square Enix demo performed at this year's E3 that used the Luminous Engine in real time. Apparently, the engine can be used in any console and even on iPads.
If you haven't seen the tech demo yet, this video should give you an idea what you can expect, graphical wise.
Square Enix's Yoshihisa Hashimoto explained that the engine isn't tied to any platform: "[It's designed for] PC already, probably PlayStation 3, mobile, iPad tablets, also browser and cloud as well. Not just next-gen – we can scale,"
Hashimoto has also claimed that the Luminous Engine hasn't been optimized yet for AI, audio, and other parts of a game but this has been done on purpose, as the process of putting all these together will be easier this way.
This engine could be the basis for great thing indeed, instead of having to port or make a game exclusive to a certain console; they can instead make a different version of the game for each platform. I don't know about you, but I’m actually excited to see how this engine will perform on Next Gen consoles and the games that will use it.
But I would also like to remind everyone that good graphics, a good game do not make.
Yeah, I hear XIII-2 was an improvement over XIII, but Ive heard rumors of XIII-3? If they do that I might lose hope <.< lol But we'll have to wait and see; New Generation, New Games. (as you said)
I'm inclined to agree with you
Yeah, well I'm not really surprised, if Capcom can misspell their own name then Square may not know who they were when they made one of their flagship title. But in all seriousness. From what I know, the first 9 FF games were SquareSoft made. Final Fantasy 10 was the first Enix game and the second game of Square on PS2. The first being The Bouncer.
I don't think Square knows what they want period.
This is what a Final Fantasy game should be like!
Could be anyday now.
I'm still hoping for Final Fantasy Versus XIII which uses the Luminous Engine for lighting in conjunction with the Crystal Tools Engine.
That's the funny thing about history. One either learns from past mistakes and grows stronger from them...Or is doomed to repeat it untill the end of time. Guess we'll have to wait to see which way the coin flip turns out.
I'm looking forward for Square Enix's what they call the game that "Dethrones Final Fantasy VII." That on these graphics would be amazing, but if they pull another XIII type game (sorta meh, repetitive) then It would be a major let down. Plus if they can create a good new Final Fantasy, they can port the game to several devices or make spin offs (Imagine Advent Children the game for ipad 4 or something) or entirely new games. Basically I'm just worried that Square Enix might have the tech but if they make another XIII quality game then they would probably make bad spinoffs and cash ins. Imagine if Unreal Engine on the iOS devices was only used on a bad spin off of doom? Yeah.
Yeap but that's the fun of it.... actually wait no, it ain't :P
Yeah but to be fair, few are the men that can live up to Bruce Campbell.
I don't do it justice the way Bruce Campbell riffs on David Caruso (the scene in question is about a fashion designer in an episode of Burn Notice)
OH GOD SIR, YOUR SUNGLASSES APPEAR TO HAVE SOME KIND OF MAGICAL POWER!
I guess you could say *punts on sunglasses* you hit the nail on the head.
You do make a very valid point dear sir, it seems Square-Enix keeps buying the tools...but then never does anything with them, or just ends up focusing more on them then on what they're meant to make. It's like going to a hardware store, buying a whole fancy expensive set of tools and then making a crappy birdhouse and once that's done, they never touch the tools and instead go buy a better more expensive set.
I'm more coming from the business angle that it's misappropriated funds where they had something that worked. The only reason why I could see this being worth announcing is that they've got something big planned for the iPhone/iPad/Microsoft Surface as the mobile market has been exploding. Epic has recently announced that Infinity Blade has become their profitable game of all time. That's HUGE. Unless if Square-Enix is planning to directly capitalize on that, they're just trying to safe money on using one engine for every project.......and that can be a slippery slope for a developer. I just hope they put in all the tools they will ever need otherwise this is money wasted.
There's just really no need for any bashing or fowl language man, we're all g1's and we all have our opinions, i respect yours and i hope ya respect mine in return :3
It's true that FFXIII a ridiculous amount of hype. Daikatana faced a similar situation when it was released. I respect your position and I applaud with the way you responded with such civility and poise.
