Luminous Engine scalable to any platform

7/2/12 2:00pm

If you're anything like me, you were blown away by Agni's Philosophy, the Square Enix demo performed at this year's E3 that used the Luminous Engine in real time. Apparently, the engine can be used in any console and even on iPads.

If you haven't seen the tech demo yet, this video should give you an idea what you can expect, graphical wise.

Square Enix's Yoshihisa Hashimoto explained that the engine isn't tied to any platform: "[It's designed for] PC already, probably PlayStation 3, mobile, iPad tablets, also browser and cloud as well. Not just next-gen – we can scale,"

Hashimoto has also claimed that the Luminous Engine hasn't been optimized yet for AI, audio, and other parts of a game but this has been done on purpose, as the process of putting all these together will be easier this way.

This engine could be the basis for great thing indeed, instead of having to port or make a game exclusive to a certain console; they can instead make a different version of the game for each platform. I don't know about you, but I’m actually excited to see how this engine will perform on Next Gen consoles and the games that will use it.

But I would also like to remind everyone that good graphics, a good game do not make.

Obvious cheap shot is very cheap.

This is what a Final Fantasy game should be like!

The fact that this engine is scalable and could (concievably) be used on a multiple platforms is quite exciting. I would like to see more major graphic engines compete with the popular Unreal Enigine (which I've never particularly loved). More competition is always welcomed. On the disappointing cheap shot, Final Fantasy XIII was NOT as bad as people would lead you to believe. Was it the best Final Fantasy? Certainly Not. However, it wasn't a terrible entry either.

I'm looking forward for Square Enix's what they call the game that "Dethrones Final Fantasy VII." That on these graphics would be amazing, but if they pull another XIII type game (sorta meh, repetitive) then It would be a major let down. Plus if they can create a good new Final Fantasy, they can port the game to several devices or make spin offs (Imagine Advent Children the game for ipad 4 or something) or entirely new games. Basically I'm just worried that Square Enix might have the tech but if they make another XIII quality game then they would probably make bad spinoffs and cash ins. Imagine if Unreal Engine on the iOS devices was only used on a bad spin off of doom? Yeah.

I'm still hoping for Final Fantasy Versus XIII which uses the Luminous Engine for lighting in conjunction with the Crystal Tools Engine.

Could be anyday now.

That's the funny thing about history. One either learns from past mistakes and grows stronger from them...Or is doomed to repeat it untill the end of time. Guess we'll have to wait to see which way the coin flip turns out.

Yeah, I hear XIII-2 was an improvement over XIII, but Ive heard rumors of XIII-3? If they do that I might lose hope <.< lol But we'll have to wait and see; New Generation, New Games. (as you said)

I hold no grudges against FF13, wasn't what I expected yeah sure, but it wasn't that bad at all, just not what people had in mind. As for the cheap shot, it's just used to ilustrated a point, Daikatana could have also been used to the same effect.

It's true that FFXIII a ridiculous amount of hype. Daikatana faced a similar situation when it was released. I respect your position and I applaud with the way you responded with such civility and poise.
