Massive layoffs at Blizzard - 600 people out of work

3/1/12 11:00am

Editor's Note: I just want to mention that most layoffs occur once a game's development is complete. With two or three titles expected to come out this year, do you think Blizzard is just positioning themselves to release something?

Layoffs seem to be a big thing as of late, so what does Blizzard announce today? They're laying off 600 people. CEO Mike Morhaime had this to say.

"Over the last several years, we've grown our organization tremendously and made large investments in our infrastructure in order to better serve our global community. However, as Blizzard and the industry have evolved we've also had to make some difficult decisions in order to address the changing needs of our company."

That sounds so sad right? Well they also said "World of Warcraft development team will not be affected"

Yeah, the people who play WoW are fine, but what about the 600 people you just screwed over? To the 600 people who were laid off i wish the best for you and hope you can fine somewhere else to work .

I hope it isn't because of a guy like in South Park who keeps getting rid of player characters. :P

Man, that really sucks. Even in one of the most successful career industries in the world, people lose their jobs.

This is normal, some employees are working by contract once contract is finish they stop working there, there can be times where the company can renew their contracts but if they believe it is not needed then the employee is laid off. I was offered to work with Ubisoft Monday for a 6 month contract as level 1 Tech Support for developers for an MMO Triple A title. So maybe I get re-newed or not or a new contract saying like level 2 tech support or another position in the company. It's just business... you can't keep employees once a game is finished there's almost nothing to do but after-launch patches.

sometimes they do this to avoid paying for benefits however if these employees are actually people under Blizzard and not some random agency or independent contractors then it would not be beneficial to fire all of them unless Blizzard really had no way in paying for further employment

Man, I know this is a part of life and people get laid off at times, but I hate reading about these stories. It's sad to see so many talented people out of work.

I'm glad that editor's note is up there, because it's the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this headline.

What people did they kick off? Sc2? Warcraft? Diablo? I hope it's wc, that game can rot. In reality thought they were probaply SC2 and Diablo 3 people, D3 is basicly ready and in tweaking phase and SC2 campaign must be pretty much ready too.

edit. also fuck you for becoming big company and not giving a shit

A lot of the time you grab 1000 interns and see what floats to the top. Lay offs aren't a big deal. If an employee doesn't do work or profit the company, why would you continue to pay them? You had your shot and surfed facebook all day every day.... buh bye. edit: quick search they have over 5000 employees 2011.
