Mega Evolutions to shake up the Pokemon Trading Card Game next February

Mega Evolutions has been heralded as X and Y’s most drastic shake up to the traditional Pokemon formula, as allowing some of the franchise’s most powerful monsters to further evolve in the heat of battle has added an all-new layer of strategy, which we’ve learned won’t be restricted to the video games.
According to a recent press release, The Pokemon Company has also decided to implement this mechanic into the popular Pokemon Trading Card Game. Mega Evolutions will come to Pokémon-EX cards like Venusaur-EX and Blastoise-EX, which can be found in the Pokemon X and Y 10-card booster packs that will be gracing store shelves on February 5, 2014.
While these cards will certainly come in handy during intense matches, players will have to use caution before playing their Mega Evolution cards since initiating a Mega Evolution will result in the player forfeiting their turn, leaving their newly evolved Pokemon open to attack. But of course once their opponent’s turn has finished, the player can unleash a devastating attack, not to mention the new Mega form also has a higher amount of HP, so the risk can pay-off quite well.
If you don’t want to wait until February to expand your deck with Kalos Region Pokemon, you can pick up a Pokémon TCG: XY—Kalos Starter Set on November 8. This will be the first PTCG expansion to feature Fairy-type Pokemon, the only Pokemon in the game to have a resistance to Darkness-types.

Every X and Y booster pack and Kalos Starter Set will included a code to unlock virtual cards for the online version of the game.
