Mighty No. 9 to bust zombies in Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z

12/16/13 4:00pm

Beck from Mighty No. 9 is appearing in Team Ninja's upcoming game Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z.

The character is the star of Keiji Inafune and Comcept's Mighty No. 9, the spiritual successor to the Mega Man franchise and recent spark of Internet outrage. Beck is appearing as part of a downloadable content pack and is one of three costumes for the game's protagonist to wear. It isn't clear if the costumes will be available outside of Japan.

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is being developed as a joint effort by Team Ninja, Spark Unlimited and Comcept. Inafune is involved as a character designer and creator of Yaiba Kamikaze, a cyborg ninja on a quest to gain revenge against Ryu Hayabusa. Yaiba must stop a zombie outbreak before enacting his revenge.

Robot costumes in zombie-related games has become somewhat of a specialty for Inafune. Capcom's Dead Rising featured a Mega Man costume for protagonist Frank West, and Dead Rising 2: Off the Record featured a Proto Man costume. Capcom continued the tradition after Inafune's departure by adding a Mega Man X costume into Dead Rising 3.

Might No. 9 made headlines this fall when its Kickstarter campaign reached $3.8 million in funding. The campaign initially requested $900,000. It is a side-scrolling action game similar to the Mega Man games Inafune helped create.

Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z is scheduled to release Feb. 27, 2014 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows and iOS. North America will have to wait until March 4.

Mighty No. 9 releases sometime in 2015 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Wii U, PC, Mac and Linux, according to its Kickstarter page.
