Minecraft cited as "zombie-slaying game" in Elementary School weapons charges kerfuffle
Editor's Note: How suitably ironic that one of the games that has done so much to encourage creativity, would be so misunderstood by the media. I think Lagunacloud's analogy of this being "digital Legos" is spot on and the violence (if any) is ancillary to the overall experience. I've updated an image or two and added the video. So in the endless search for a scapegoat for why terrible tragedies happen, parents have started blaming Minecraft of all games. There is a laundry list of reasons why this is stupid, but to clarify for anyone who isn't in the know, Minecraft is a game about creativity. What you can build, what you can create.
Sure there is violence in the game in the form of the creatures you have to fight, but the goal isn't to go out and kill these things. The goal is to (you know) mine? It's pretty much digital Legos. So why is this being targeted? I guess I'll never understand the logic behind these things.
Fortunately there was no injuries nor was it a big incident that unfolded.
I swear, this is a new all-time record for the depth of stupidity of video game scapegoating. If the cumulative amount of time the dad had ever spent watching his son play was more than about three seconds, he would know that nothing remotely resembling any of those weapons is in Minecraft. HE deserves jail time for knowing and caring so little about what kinds of media his son is experiencing. And how can a 9-year-old lift a sledgehammer, even a small one?
ahhhhhhhh...(insert fanboy hate). (insert racial and sexual comment about father). Frowning face.
I suppose you haven't heard about the hundreds killed in murders and massacres committed in the name of islam?
Well you can build the hammer but yeah. Also, who can fit a sledge hammer into his backback? He must have a massive duffel bag.
No, this is about him trying to save his kid. He has seen it happen before. Honestly he is a worthless parent and needs his kid taken away.
Now excuse if i sound completely misinformed, but i thought there are no guns in minecraft.
Yeah but I doubt the nine year old knows how to mod pc games lol.
Theres really no reason to get mad at this, nothing will happen people will still play minecraft and the morons who blame the game will eventually shut up when they realize they're no longer getting attention.
Oh, how I find this hilarious. The dad was only blaming the game to take the attention of him. It's obvious that the weapons, more then just the handgun, was from his dad and I'm sure there was a reason he didn't want his face shown.
I'm legitimately mad right now. I'm so angry I feel like swearing.
300000 blocks from spawn. There's a little shop.
where do i get the hand gun bullets a knife and a hammer in minecraft! I have played for over 1000 hours and never found them.
Most progressive critiques of scripture are grounded in a superficial understanding of how Christians actually approach biblical passages. The various branches of Christianity do have theological and historiographical disagreements, of course, but this video may provide a common enough example of what I mean.
It's also important to note that the traditional Church was by no means devoid of internal examination or self-reflection. Peter Abelard, a medieval theologian and scholastic, was focusing attention on contradictory quotations in the Bible back in the 12th century.
Since my own conclusion points to differences in ideology having a biological origin, I don't believe anything will ever unite the worldviews of opposing minds. I'm an agnostic reactionary and tend to think as pre10do64 does below (albeit more harshly): the vast majority of us, religious and secular, are fucked.
Yea but no one takes peta seriously.
Not a rampage, but still: http://www.wsbtv.com/news/news/local/man-points-bible-over-killing-5-mon...
We could also look at other religious books (non-Christian) and/or other religious cultures for religious inspirations to kill (some cultures would kill because their spirits told them to kill).
I agree and disagree. If the bible is just a book then it is outdated. If it is really the word of god, like so many believe, then it can't be. Personally I don't care either way. The whole world is going to shit, religious people too. Everybody living our current lifestyles is a sinner in my opinion, myself included. But I recognize that, and acknowledge the fact that the things I say, do, watch, and even the way I eat, my extremely comfortable, consume-all, American lifestyle, is an immoral way to live. I'm cool with it, though. I like my luxuries.
Plenty of groups go on killing crusades because of the Bible and other religious books. That's killing in the name of god so it's ok.
Its a proven fact that most video game hate mongers don't know anything about the games they yell at and try to destroy
Yeah, when I heard that part my eye was twitching pretty fierce.
