Mojang shares Blizzard and Valve's concerns about Windows 8

8/3/12 11:00am

Hot on the heels of my Windows 8 opinion post comes news that yet another developer has spoken against support of Windows 8 for game developers.

The man behind the PC (and Xbox 360) hit Minecraft and head of Mojang, Notch, recently held an AMA (Ask Me Anything) thread on Reddit a few days ago.  One user asked about what he sees for the future of the (indie) gaming industry over the next 10 years.  His response?

"I hope we can keep a lot of open and free platforms around. If Microsoft decides to lock down Windows 8, it would be very very bad for Indie games and competition in general. If we can keep open platforms around, there's going to be a lot of very interesting games in ten years, mixed in with the huge AAA games that we all love."

So now we have THREE big developers (even though one of them is indie) who say Windows 8 "is a catstrophe":  Valve, Blizzard, and now, Mojang!!  I hope you're listening, Microsoft.

Personally, I see no reason why they should be doing this.  You find out why in my Windows 8 article in the above link.

I saw a lot of website but I conceive this one contains something extra in it. vigrx plus reviews Thank you for your site post. Brown|Johnson|Manley|Velupe and I happen to be saving to buy a new publication on this subject and your short article has made people like us to save money. Your thinking really clarified all our concerns. In fact, a lot more than what we had known prior to when we stumbled on your great blog. We no longer nurture doubts along with a troubled mind because you have actually|clearly|completely|really|totally|truly attended to each of our needs right here. Thanks

Misrepresenting something someone said is easier if you don't include the actual quote you're spinning. "If they lock it down it'll be bad news" is not the same as "they are locking it down and that's catastrophic."

You can't quote "is a catstrophe[sic]" if they all didn't say it. Especially Notch, who didn't say anything close to that. He just stated that Microsoft doesn't need to lock down Windows 8. He didn't say Windows 8 was bad.

I know only Gabe said it, but I was just using that as a summary of their thoughts (well, maybe not Notch's...)

and if they have to fork over some of the money they get from you buying the program the developer will raise the price to make up for the difference.

Who the hell cares about what Mojang thinks, they programmed a game in Java for the love of god. It's not like it uses Windows at all.

To me, it doesn't look like he's saying Windows 8 is bad, he's just saying that it's bad if Microsoft keeps games on just Windows 8.

By locking down they mean requiring licenses to publish software (ie a license for even the smallest of exe programs and freeware), I think. So yes, they do have a valid concern. This isn't baseless, unlike your opinions post.
