New entry coming to the Ultima franchise

7/12/12 4:00pm

The very first franchise of RPGs, Ultima, is getting a new game later this year. Titled Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar, It's going to be a free-to-play, cross-platform RPG for PC and iPads, developed by BioWare Mythic.

There really isn't much known beyond that, aside from a single screen of two playable classes displayed above. The world map on its website looks very similar to Ultima Online's world map, and the cross-platform play suggests that it may be another" MMO-ish" type game. Or, maybe an Ultima with multiplayer.

You can sign up to beta test the game at the game's website. I'm a little intrigued, as I remember having good times with Ultima Underworld and Ultima III-VI. But, after Electronic Arts took over and made Ultima VIII absolute garbage, I never really looked back. Granted, I'm not as upset about it as someone else I know.

What about you? Intereted in an Ultima-based RPG of today?

"Accept the challenge from Lady British and save the land of Britannia." Lady British? That pretty much confirms my fear that Garriott isn't involved, which is quite distressing indeed. And what's with the name? "Ultima Forever: Quest for the Avatar". I know Ultima IV is probably the most renowned game in the franchise, but you don't have to rip off it's name to get us into your sequel. Anyone who gives a shit about Quest of the Avatar is probably going to check it out, just because it's called "Ultima". I know I probably will.

Love the Spoony love going on. I have automatic interest in anything that has a Bioware logo, but at the same time the free to play model and visual art style spook me in a similar way Age of Empires online did (another franchise destroyed by corporate mishandling).
