News Corp has sold off IGN/1UP/Gamespy to Ziff Davis
J2 Global's subsidiary Ziff Davis is the owner of a fresh new gaming giant; IGN. News Corp has officially sold off the gaming website and its partners to Ziff Davis for an undisclosed amount. IGN VP Ian Chambers had this to say about their new owners
I’m happy that they were able to find a buyer, but of all the companies in the world, why would it be Ziff Davis?! For those of you who don’t know, Ziff Davis was the catalyst for the fall of 1UP, EGM, GFW, and a bunch of other gaming publications back in 2006. How ironic that 1UP (owned by IGN) would be purchased by them a second time...

I just find it funny that News Corp is now trying to distance themselves from the evils of violent videogames by selling off their game review site. You can't hide hypocrisy like that.

Many of the higher-ups at Ziff Davis are still pretty loyal to the 1up crew as they've maintained ties since their first split, but considering their financial issues in the past I'm not very confident they'll be able to keep them and not HAVE to gut the assets or sell them again.

I didn't realize 1UP was owned by IGN. Now it's going back to Ziff Davis. That's kind of hilarious.

Considering that they were the ones that shut down the Gamespy servers for older games without notice/warning & held them hostage, demanding a ridiculous amount from the developers/publishers to turn them back on, I don't think it bodes well.

Actually that was Glu Mobile. IGN sold off the Gamespy technology in a separate deal back in August.

oh thanks for clarifying that for me
