Nintendo gets an extension for its Eternal Darkness trademark

3/17/13 9:42pm

Anyone who was fan of the mind-bending GameCube horror title Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, may find this next bit news exciting. Another crafty sleuth from the NeoGAF forums has uncovered a trademark filing, this time it’s an extension filed by Nintendo for the Eternal Darkness trademark.

Does this mean Nintendo has a sequel (which survival horror fans have waited nearly 11 years for) in development? While this is certainly within the realm of possibility (although a new development team would be needed to step in), it seems more likely that Nintendo is merely protecting its property rights. However, I will say it does provide a nice ray of hope…or a lingering sense of doom and despair brought about by insanity for fans of the original. One or the other.

Wait, now that I think about, a new Eternal Darkness could be a great game to draw in the hardcore audience Nintendo is desperately hoping to draw in for the Wii U. Just a thought.

That game never scared me but it was a fun game.

The idea of an Eternal Darkness sequel scares me and excites me as much as... Eternal Darkness. It's one of my favourite GameCube games, but they'd need to work hard to live up to the standards the first game set.

And I wonder how they'd be able to make sanity effects scary now that everyone is expecting them.

It's most likely so they can port it onto the Wii U Gamecube Virtual Console.

I would bet that if they were going to do something, it would be an HD remake for the Wii-U.

That would be disappointing to say the least. Nintendo is doing that very thing with The Wind Waker which is an excellent game in its original format and does not need to be remade. Don't fix what isn't broken or in this case, out of date. Ocarina of Time had aged mechanics which could have been improved, so it merited a remake. It's been 10 years since I last played Eternal Darkness, so maybe there are aspects of the game in need of streamlining that escape my memory. Otherwise, I recall a fantastically immersive and well-paced experience with plenty of replay value.

I have to disagree. I love true HD remakes of older games. I might be the only one, but I play older games on a HD television I get a freaking headache fast.Wind Waker is awesome and looked great and if you got it hooked up to a SD CRT it's smooth sailing (pun intended). I can't wait to play it again all nicer looking and stuff on my HD tv. I would love to play Eternal Darkness in HD too, but I do think it could also stand some actual graphics enhancement as well. Honestly though I have a feeling they just renewed the trademark just in case it makes its way to the Virtual Console.
