Nintendo Power wishes it's fans a final goodbye

9/28/12 9:00am

If you haven't heard, long running gaming magazine, Nintendo Power, is unfortunately shutting down. Recently, the magazine sent out a thank you letter to all subscribers wishing them a final farewell.

Nintendo Power EIC, Chris Slate and Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Amie thank fans for reading the magazine and asking them to be patent as Nintendo heads into the next generation of gaming with the Wii U.

Here's a picture of the letter subscribers received courtesy of GONintendo...

Hey g1s, I would love to hear any of your memories of the magazine in the comments below!

Wow....those are some very powerful words. It's thoughtful for them to provide refunds as well.

I find it somewhat obvious that a spiritual successor to NP will appear in digital form on Wii U. I would be willing to be tar and feathered if time proves me wrong.

While we weren’t always following Nintendo Power, most of us were relatively content knowing that it was still around. Even though they’re ending publication this year, I’m neither enraged or in despair over it all. For some reason, it just feels…right. In NP’s case, they know when to fold and they had the decency to let EVERYONE KNOW nearly a quarter in advance. In the words of John Price of Modern Warfare fame, “To know you’re close to the end is a kind of freedom.” Compare this to GamePro’s final issue of Winter 2011 (this was the first, and last, one to use a quarterly format, switching from its monthly format just a month before). Long story short, it was brought to a rather abrupt end with almost little fanfare. Is it sad that Nintendo Power is ending? A little, but I’d like to think that we’ve had enough time to come to terms with it by now. No matter what happens now, people WILL be watching for Nintendo Power’s final issue. Their end is inevitable, but their swan song won’t go unnoticed.

On a lighter note, you could check out Electronic Gaming Monthly. I believe they still have magazines released bi-monthly, which I’ve been picking up since their revival; definitely worth checking out. ;)
